Greetings,

Back in July we adopted a sugar kitty (Themba) from a local animal refuge league. I've been lurking a bit for the last week or two and decided to post. He is being switched over to Lantus this weekend from Pro Zinc and I am hoping to have better results. I've been hesitant to do home testing but clearly I need to just "Do it" like the Nike ad's...

The biggest struggle has been him urinating through out the house and I'd just about given up and then suddenly the last three days he hasn't done it once.

Anyway that's my intro for now.

Welcome to Themba!
Home testing is the way to go! I was sooo scared of needles of any kind. When I went to the pharmacy to purchase the needles, I had to walk away because I thought I was going to faint...you should have seen the ladies face when I told her I would have to come back to talk more about it and why! nailbite_smile lol
I put it to myself this way... YOU MUST HOME TEST....find those big girl panties and put them on, get this over with, learn how to do this and look into those wonderful eyes of you Sugar Bean for a 'thanks mommy'.....
Yes, I found those big girl panties and started testing. I have a spread sheet below that will show you the first test I was successful at could have been a tragedy as she was at 27!!!!! :o
I tried testing several times before I was successful: could not get enough blood, or Bean would move her head, etc.
It did get easier for us both and due to several things: this site for sure, low carb food, regular testing and shooting... My Bean is in remission (OTJ - OFF THE JUICE). Her first shot was from the vet on 4/21ish and her last shot was 5/24ish.
You will have all the help you need from this board!
Bean started peeeing small thumb nail amounts everywhere and she had a uti infection but that was due to the diabetes and once she was regulated, the peeing stopped and she would go where she was supposted to go!
Again, welcome to the BEST place you will find!

Good morning, Irene, and welcome to the most awesome place you wish never had to find!

Hometesting is indeed a most valuable resource. While insulins like Prozinc and Lantus ARE long-lasting and more gentle, cats can still have WIDE variances of numbers on them and can still go hypoglycemic on them. Hometesting regularly will help you ensure that Themba is always safe, AND will allow you to take control of Themba's dosing so that you won't have to rely on the vet.

I highly recommend the Relion Confirm meter from Walmart. The meter is only $9, and strips are 50 for $20, which is the best retail price you'll find. The Arkray Glucocard 01 is the generic version of the meter, and you can get strips for even cheaper at ADW. You'll want to use a lancet that is 30 gauge or larger (the smaller the number, the bigger the needle) at first. You'll also want to get a low carb treat to give with every ear poke, successful or not. You'll find that soon, Themba may be begging to be tested because he wants a treat! We use Purebites freeze dried chicken breast, though I buy the big bags in the dog treat aisle as they last longer and are more economical.

Before you get started on Lantus, I'd encourage you to head over to our Lantus forum where we have a number of stickies with invaluable information on how lantus works, the protocol many of us follow, etc. I suggest printing them out and keeping them in a binder with the contact information, location, and directions if needed to your closest 24 hour vet. When I was first starting out, I'd need a particular piece of information in a hurry and would have trouble trying to remember which sticky I saw it in. I found it was much easier to have them all printed out, where I could take notes and mark them up however I saw fit. You'll find many of us post a daily thread or "condo" over there. It is truly a wonderful family. You'll want to use our spreadsheet template to set up a method of tracking Themba's BG#s. It is an invaluable resource.

Also, you'll want to make sure you have the correct syringes when you make the switch. While prozinc is a U40 insulin, lantus is a U100, so the syringes are different. Walmart is also a good source for syringes... a box of U100 syringes is around $12 for 100... much cheaper than the BDs! I'd recommend getting the short needle ones.

Ask for these: 3/10cc, 5/16", 31 gauge (or 30 if that's all they have). They should have the units marked in 1/2u increments, which is important. Generally, you'll be making changes to the dose in 0.25u increments, which are MUCH easier to measure on the 1/2u marked syringes.

What food are you currently feeding? That may be having an effect on the numbers Themba is showing on the Prozinc.

Please ask questions as you have them... you'll find that the folks here are more than happy to help!

Hello to you both,

Well I did my very first test this morning and Themba was so very unhappy with me. Of course I had a hard time finding the right spot (so I finally got a flashlight) and then got it. Also I purchased the Relion Confirm meter as suggested and it was easy to read etc, thank you!

The meter read 484 mg's but he was also stressed and I gave him 1 unit. The vet suggested two but I am scared since I wont' be back until lunch time to check on him. This feeling is terrible but the more I thought about it yesterday the more panicked I became thinking of all the what if's... I love this little shelter kitty and feel blessed to have him.

I currently feed a mix of the Fancy Feast classics, Weruva, and Canyon River Taste of the Wild dry food (Grain Free). He gets Stella & Chewys Chick, chick, chicken dinner as treats.

Breathing a huge sigh of relief over here (I did it and know tonight I can and will do it again).

Thank you very much for giving me the push I needed to do this.

YOU DID IT....YOU DID IT..... YOU DID IT! :RAHCAT :RAHCAT \M/ \M/ \M/

Good going mommy bean and I know Themba thanks you too (even if he is not showing it ....yet). Bean did not like the pokey poke at first and neither did mommy... She knew that I was stressed even tho I tryied like crazy not to show it... The better you get, the better he should get.
Do you know the carb count of the dry you are feeding?? Do you think he would ever just go for the wet? It took a while for my girls to go wet only..Bean did not care and Gumpy would eat anything, but my Slappy was another story. She did not go completely wet until she got sick and I had to dropper feed her. I took that time to take up her dry and she now will ONLY EAT prescription A/D, which is still high carb - so Sugar Bean cannot have it but it is better not to have dry in my house at all.

Keep us posted of how he is doing.
