Good morning,

I have never been on anything like this before. So I'm not sure how all of this works.

I am in a bit of a bind. I have a cat named Oreo who is 8 years old and was diagnosed with diabetes a few months ago. This has been a long and expensive process so far. I am a 21 year old full time college student and also full time working who is also trying to take care of a diabetic cat. I have had Oreo since I was 13.. I adopted him from our local animal shelter when he was 6 months old. I am having a hard time figuring out what to do with my kitty. He is like my child and I love him with all of my heart and it is so hard even putting this post out there, but I am wanting to find him a home where someone can properly care for him the way he needs to be. It gets really hard when I am working and I end up missing a shot or my mom isn't able to help out. The cost is also hurting for he is on specific food and giving 7 units of insulin twice a day with also having to purchase needles.

I just need some guidance and some help in finding the best possible place for him to go where he will be extra loved and cared for.

Hi. I am sorry you are struggling with the situation. Would you be open to trying to keep Oreo if we could give you some ideas to make it more manageable?

First of all, there are ways to make it cheaper. When you say 'specific food' I am assuming you have him on some 'prescription' food your vet told you to use. If so, you do not have to use that food. You can feed him Fancy Feast Classics, for example, or I think there are even some Friskies that are okay. The main thing is that you want to keep the carbs as low as possible, definitely under 10%. This cat food database can help you see which foods qualify so that you know what you can try. For needles, I would recommend ADW. You can get a box of 100 for pretty cheap. I always find/use a coupon code to make it even cheaper. If you are taking Oreo to the vet regularly for glucose checks, that is something you do not have to do. You can test at home. You can use a people meter to save costs on that, too.

As far as scheduling, you do need to be able to give two insulin shots each day. If you want to give us an idea of your schedule and when your mom can and can't help, we might be able to help you figure something out on that, too.

7 units of insulin twice a day is a HUGE dose. What kind of insulin is it and what kind of glucose testing was done to determine dosing increases? Sometimes, the dose is actually too high and needs to be brought back down - as an added bonus, that can save you money as well.

If your mind is already made up to give Oreo away, you may not want to address any of this, but if you still want to try to keep him, we can certainly try to help you figure it out!

Diabetes doesn't have to be that expensive! You don't need any expensive food - Friskies pates at about $.50/can is just fine. He may not even really need all that insulin with proper diet. We can help you help him!

It is overwhelming at first but after a while you do get into a routine as far as needles goes I called different drugstores most wanted $30 for 100 needles except for Walmart I got 100 needles for $12.72. I also think seven unit is hi my cat gets two units twice a day. I Feed my cat fancy feast classic's and Friskies pate. I hope you can work it all out since you've had Oreo for so long he loves you and would miss you.Good luck.

I will consider it for sure, but I still want to know my options for how to get into contact with people who do take in diabetic cat. I don't know who to find or look for or if there are even people who do take in cats with diabetes because I know it will be added expense.
