Hello everyone. I'm new here. I recently found out that my cat, Simone', has diabetes. She is 14 years, 9 months in age. Not overweight and in relative good health. I began noticing she was walking on the heels of her back legs, that she was eating voracious amounts of food but not gaining weight, and she was peeing like a fire truck. I used my own glucose meter (Bayer) to test her sugars (ear stick) and discovered her sugar was 386 mg/dl. For several days I continued to test her sugars but they were always high. I called a vet in the area and took her that Saturday, March 10, 2012. He didn't run any tests on her, but he was actually pleased with the tests I ran. He was impressed with her condition, she still have a beautiful coat (she's part Russian Blue).

Anyway, he prescribed 2 units of ProZinc and sent me on my way with Simone'. Yesterday, I decided to run a glucose curve. The results are in a PDF format which hopefully I can attach to this message. I plan on faxing these results to her doctor but I would also like opinions from this group.

Her appetite has lessened but she feels like she's starting to fill out a bit. She no longer has massive clumps of urine, they are now much smaller and much less. Her back legs are getting stronger, she certainly can kick a lot harder

Please let me know your ideas and feedback. Thank you!

Kindest regards,
Mea Culpa

Hello to Simone and mommabean!
Goood job to test her before insulin. I cannot open your sheet here at work, but wanted to offer up a warm welcome to you.
What kinds of food does she eat?
My Sugar Bean is very very carb sensitive. She now gets low carb foods from the binky list and we also do raw.
Paw hugs and happy hellos coming your way!

I feed Simone' 2 small cans of Fancy Feast CLASSIC in the morning, and 2 small cans of Fancy Feast CLASSIC 12 hours later in the evening. Before her diabetes was diagnosed, she would lick the bowl dry. Now that she's on insulin, she's actually leaving food in the bowl so apparently she's not feeling a ravenous hunger as she felt before. She's not overweight, never was, but she was losing weight and felt "bony". Now, she's beginning to fill in a bit again.

Simone's BG Curve is a PDF file. You can open it with Acrobat Reader from Adobe.

Hello Mea

Here is a link to help you set up a spreadsheet for Simone's BG numbers http://felinediabetes.com/FDMB/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=50130

Did the vet prescribe anything for her neuropathy? Simone should be getting B12 to help with that. I haven't had that problem with Vyktor so I can't remember the name of the stuff that she needs but hopefully someone else will come along that knows it.

Welcome aboard

Thank you.

Yes, Simone' is getting B12 (the methyl version). 5mg (5,000mcg) once a day. Very easy to give, nothing to swallow, it just dissolves in her mouth. Magic!
