Hello Everyone,
Here is a little info on me.
My name is Chester I am a 10yr old short hair cat and I was diagnosed diabetic in June 2013. My parents are having a hard time keeping me regulated. Our experience seems to indicate that diet and insulin dosage is a difficult balancing act. We are hoping to learn more about my condition and to share what we have learned battling diabetes these last 2 years.
Thank you all for your warm greetings

Hello there! Tiggy was just diagnosed a few weeks ago. I've definitely found this to be a challenging balancing act as you mentioned on your post.
Along with regular blood glucose testing, and the low-carb treats, (for Tiggy's BG tests & insulin shots), it has helped to switch up Tiggy's diet (canned food only, no dry food) in addition to all the fantastically supportive folks and all the great resources on this site, have definitely made this journey more bearable.
Welcome aboard!

Welcome to FDMB, the best place you never wanted to be.

There are 4 things you'll need to manage your kitty's diabetes:
- You - without your commitment, the following won't work
- Low carb over the counter canned or raw diet, such as Friskies pates. See Cat Info for more info,
- A long-lasting insulin such as ProZinc, Lantus, BCP PZI, or Levemir
- And home blood glucose monitoring with an inexpensive human glucometer such as the WalMart Relion Confirm or Target Up and Up (the pet ones will break your budget!)

As you both have mentioned Chester is being strictly fed canned food. We are also using the AlphaTRAK BG monitoring system with the freestyle lite test strips. I will look in to the informative links that BJM posted and I'm sure I will learn a lot more.
Thank you all again for your warm greetings!

You might check out the Glucometer Notes and the Secondary Monitoring Tools in my signature link, too.
