Hi everyone. I'm Hannah and I have a lovely near 12 year old all white kitty named Signe who is diabetic. She just through a bad bout with ketoacidosis & is in recovery, thanks to the helpful people at DCIN. Her recovery has been going well, although tonight her keytones were quite high. I called a 24 hour vet to ask if I should do anything & they said that I should stay calm as long as she is eating/drinking well & her activity level seems good. She seems to be okay from my observations, but I'm still worried so I am going to call the vet first thing. If anyone had any thoughts, please feel free to tell me. I'm new to this.

Hi Hannah,

If she is still at the vet's office, the unwashed shirt will comfort her and keep her calm.

Can you tell us more about Signe? What insulin is she on and what dose? What do you feed her? Are you hometesting?

I would suggest that you begin reading information on this site. Concentrate on the information about diet, insulin and hometesting. We can make suggestions that will help you control Signe's diabetes and possibly prevent ketoacidosis from happening again.

Encourage fluid intake to help flush the ketones.
Add a tablespoon or 2 of water to the canned food to help, if he'll eat it that way.
When you contact the vet, ask about subQ fluids.
