I have a new cat named Andre' who is very ill with an URI. During the testing the vet said he is diabetic and I was not surprised to hear the verdict as he was showing signs.

Despite my protest this vet believes in Lantus so for the time being that is what he is one. I'll do one vile and then switch unless he is perfection with Lantus. However, I can change vets to one who will allow me to dictate the insulin.

So, my question is...Has anyone ever changed from Lantus and what type of adjustment is required? Lantus is measured by the Nadir and not the pre-shot numbers as I understand it..still a newbie on Lantus so I'm not sure of anything. Is Levemir the same?

Thanks all!

Yes. Levemir is similar to Lantus in that respect. Since Andre is newly diagnosed, Lantus is fine and has shown a high remission rate if the tight regulation protocol is followed. I am not sure what you would consider switching to other than Levemir, Prozinc would be going backwards if you ask me as both Lantus & Levemir have longer action.

Of course, you know the standards on food and whatnot.

One thing I would like you to consider is the fact that both illness and vet stress can raise a cat's blood glucose considerably. Unless a fructosamine test was done on the bloodwork, I would be cautious at this point as to a confirmed diagnosis of diabetes.

What signs was Andre showing and for how long? Has he lost weight too?

This is very complicated a he has been deathly sick and not eating..so he has lost a ton of weight. Was it due to the URI or Diabetes or both?

Right now I am less worried about the Diabetes as getting him well. I guess they go hand and hand. One vet says he has it and the other one says he does not. I am waiting for answers and to be honest in great turmoil because he cannot breath to eat or drink. He is on two antibiotics..Orbax and Clndamycin. Orbax is a Orbifloxacyn and somewhat new I guess. I'm going to ask the vet about Zenequin which is a Marlbofloxacyn. I think that is a flouroquinalone.

I only would consider going to Levemir.

Right now I have two vets fighting.

This must be very difficult. You are right that the URI has to be resolved before you can really know how bad the diabetes is. Have you been able to check BGs at home?

I'm no help on the ABs. Hugs for you and Andre.

I have two vets fighting who are not happy with me or me with them.

This is extremely upsetting and I am so upset for Andre'. He is such a great and pleasant boy.

These vets suck! You can't get any two of them to agree on anything.

What were his BG numbers taken at both vets?

If you re going to give insulin, you probably want to start off very low - .5u. With an infection and not eating I would be concerned about trying to keep his BG down. You don't want to risk DKA. Is he dehydrated? Maybe some sub-q fluids would be helpful.
