Hi I just want to introduce myself and Freddie. He was just diagnosed yesterday and is in the hospital. His glucose and creatine was high. He is getting insulin and iv rehydration. We are hoping for the best, and will take it as it comes. I have armed myself with some of the valuable information you have here. We are still weary from last year's losing battles with cancer and hyperthyroidism for his brother and sister. Freddie got put on the back burner but now its his turn. We now have 3 cats (down from 3) and a dog. Thanks in advance for the support & answers you will provide to the many questions I will be posting when I bring him home.

Welcome! Good thoughts for your Freddie. One thing you might do, if he is going to stay overnight, is to take one of your unwashed tshirts in for him to sleep on. It will smell like home.

This site is full of excellent information. When we first came, I printed off everything I read so I could read and reread until I understood it. You will find we have a very successful protocol that calls for wet, lo carb food and insulin doses determined by testing at home.

Read, ask questions. We would love to help Freddie back to health.

Just wanted to say hello. My cat Max was diagnosed in January. I'm sure you're already figuring out that you've come to the best place for help with your diabetic cat. I knew next to nothing at first and was overwhelmed and stressed, but diabetes can be very manageable. This forum and following the great advice really helped me turn Max's health around.

Re: hello and thanks- need help already

Thank you for your welcome. I need help please.
I feel lost and confused right now, because we just came back from visiting Freddie. The vet on duty (not his vet- who is off today) said that his BUN is not going down even with iv fluids.
It was 130 when I brought him in almost 48 hours ago. Its now at 129.
He ate twice yesterday, but not today until we came in and told him to eat (He has a towel from home, but i should have checked this post and brought him a t shirt-i am not thinking straight.).
The vet said he didn't think this is a good sign for the future but wants to keep him over the weekend to keep trying the fluids.
His Crea was at 4.5 now at 4.4
His Gluc was at 605 now at 576 (but yesterday it was down after insulin)
I neglected to say that all this was brought on by steroid treatment for severe mouth ulcers which he has now again and will have to be treated alternatively. I knew the risk and I should have found natural treatments years ago.
Are there any posts here that you can refer me to, or any insight? Anyone else start off like this?
I'm afraid they will tell me there is no hope for a quality life for him, when indeed there is.
Or i'm afraid i will have false hope when there isn't room for much.
thank you so much.

Do they say he is in DKA? If so, you can take hope from two recent posters: kse and tajana340. Their posts are located on this page. Both had kitties in DKA in the ER and both cats are now home.

I don't know about the BUN and Creat levels. We do have several vet techs who post here . If you would start a new subject and ask specifically about help with lab values, they might see your post. In fact, I think I would change the subject line for this one. It sounds like you are thanking us for helping with your diabetic kitty, when you really need help for your kitty in the ER. Here is a thread about BUN and Creatine levels: http://www.felinediabetes.com/phorum5/read.php?8,22968 I don't know if it will help.

I am sorry; I have no direct experience. Hopefully others will be along. The board is very quiet today.

Just wanted to say Hi! the board is quiet today, so I thought I would reassure you that you can handle this, and that you can acquire the knowledge you need to fight this fight.

My 4 year old Payne was Dk in October and immediately went into DKA and was in the hospital for ten days.
During that time I found this list and started educating myself but she went into DKA after being home for three days again ..... almost dead she pulled through again, home two days and the worst DKA ever. But by
this time I was more aware and started making all the changes and she is doing very well.

It has been/continues to be a long haul but one that ends with a healthy cat who happens to have diabetes.
If it is DKA I would add that to your heading because by the subject line it doesn't seem as if you are looking for help, esp. if it is DKA. There is much help here and you can have help every step of the way! You have just hit a quiet time good luck.
Nancy and Payne (who is on a new insulin and has no ketones ..... recently seen chasing 100 lb. puppy

Is Freddie at a 24/7 clinic? If not, he really needs to be so he can be monitored round the clock....especially his electrolytes. Have they tested him for ketones?

Hi All,
forgive me this is a lot to digest in a weekend. i also had a friend's funeral today and a business i'm trying to keep going.
I do not yet know what DKA is, so i can't answer.
I picked Freddie up from the hospital today and am about to feed him and then give him our first insulin shot. Wish us luck.
We are not doing glucose testing (yet). I was given a prescription and instructions to feed him and give him insulin if he eats, after he eats.
I was shown how to give sub Q fluid and have instructions to do it every other day.
My vet and i haven't gone over everything yet, but we know we have to deal with diabetes first, than the CRF. i joined the CRF yahoo group and read all the introductory literature from this wonderful site.
My vet is not crazy about message boards and forums (too bad!),
All I know is that my vet has had many diabetic patients, I trust her, but not to the exclusion of this valuable information offered by you all.
I am going to have to weigh it all out.
For now I'll follow her simple instructions and not try to do or know too much too soon.
Just learning this format is hard.
I will start a new subject soon.
I don't want to break any rules, and just haven't learned them all yet.

What is DKA?

I was asked if freddie is in DKA. I don't know.
He came home with me today and is on 1.5 units humilin 2 X a day after eating. He is eating, and seems fine. He has CRF. All this is newly Dx. Sub Q every other day.
I have not been able to talk to the vet yet. She was in surgery.
Is there something about DKA I should ask when i talk to her tomorrow?
BTW She said none of her patients have ever done BG at home testing, but I see that you all recommend it. So maybe I'll try.
freddie and I appreciate your patience. I'll graduate eventually.
