Hello Again (previous thread reached 100 posts)

and I asked about her weight.

We have an appointment with the vet later in the month where she will be weighed, she has been putting weight on since August.

This is a shot from September 2010 where she and her brother, Mulder, are checking a map to find where their new forever home was.

Oh so adorable! And do you still have Mulder?

Scully and Mulder! I didn’t get the X Files connection until you said Mulder!

Just back from the vet, Scully is doing fine. She has put on another 500g since the last visit about two months ago, so now weighs 4.2Kg. Arranging a blood test in the near future.

But all good news.

Hi Suzanne,

We are off on our holidays in the morning, and Scully and the rest of the cats are going int a cattery. The owner has experience with diabetic cats, and so will inject Scully, though she says in her experience that testing an already stressed cat won't give accurate readings. So we are planning on Scully receiving 3.25 or 3.5 units, twice a day.

It is a shame we are going away now, as Scully's readings have been just about perfect, but we both need to get away.

So, there we have it.

The cats should be being taken at about 16:30 today, we will feed and test Scully before she goes.

Thanks,

Ian

For three days out of the last four, Scully's bloods got very low.

Monday she got to 2.3, and was staggering round. We acted quickly and got her sugars up.

But both yesterday and today she got to below three at +5, we acted quickly again, and she recovered in three hours yesterday, an hour today.

Should we reduce her insulin in the mornings, we currently giver her 3.50 units, but this now seems too much, even 3.25 seems to trigger an episode. She doesn't seem to be eating as much as she used to, less than a pack now at meals, rather than one and a half

Thanks

I only see the one lime green on her spreadsheet, but that must have been very scary! I do see the even more recent lower numbers as well. I would advise reducing her regular dose down to 3 units for both morning AND evening doses. In fact, you might consider reducing to 2.75 units for both a.m. and p.m. and seeing how it goes before making a decision to increase back up to 3 units. I would be happy with this choice.

I see quite a few days where there are no tests during the day, so this has me concerned about how low she may have been dropping. I also question the nighttime cycles. For example, on April 9 and April 16, Scully had lower blue preshot numbers at AMPS time. I question whether she had dropped low during the evening cycle.

Her insulin requirements have changed a bit over time and this isn’t unusual — so it pays to be vigilant and not get complacent and forget to test for at least her nadir during the day and a test before bedtime in the evening.

I hope you and Jools are both well! Good job getting Scully’s BG back up.

Looking over your spreadsheet again…. and looking for more lime green numbers, I know that you are using the Alpha Trak Pet meter — and that means that anything below a 68 should be coded lime green. I don’t think the spreadsheet is the correct format. But that’s all right — I just want to make sure that you know that anything that is below 68, (3.7 or 3.8 in your numbers) on your AT meter is the “take action” number, which means you need to intervene with high carb food and or honey or corn syrup.

So this is all the more reason why I actually would prefer that you drop her dose down to 2.75 units and then test carefully to see how that new dose is working for her. This would be a safe course of action. Now if she ends up having a pre-shot number of something in the blues — especially the mid to lower blues— I probably would go ahead and drop the dose down even as low as 2 units (unless you are stalling the shot to test and see that her numbers are really coming up before you give the insulin.)
