Hi all, my 13yo civvie, Molly, has been more interested in drinking and has been voiding large amounts of urine. I have checked her BG several times and it's always in the 50-60s. So she isn't diabetic. I guess we are due a vet visit, but what else can it be? Kidney problems? She is already on the same diet as my OTJ diabetic. (his bg is also fine, so the pee isn't him either. Some investigation and stalking revealed the civvie is doing the pools). Has anyone been through this? Anything I should be aware of or ask the vet?

Hello And Welcome,
I don't have an answer for you but I wanted to welcome you here.

You will probably have to wait and let a vet see what the problem is.
I don't think a cat with a urinary tract infection drinks lots of water too but they will pee more and usually in inappropriate places.

There are meters that are considered to be inaccurate.
Let us know what the vet says.

I would definitely take her to the vet to get checked out. One thing that stands out for me is Chronic Kidney Disease, which is VERY common in older cats, especially if they ate a dry diet most of their life. CKD doesn't show up in bloodwork until a cat has lost most of its kidney function, so you may also want to get a urinalysis if the blood work comes back inconclusive.

CKD is completely manageable, and early stage cats are perfectly healthy on the right diet (raw or canned high quality protein/low phosphorus food). IMHO, CKD is so common that it's a good idea for any cat over the age of 12 to eat a kidney friendly diet since CKD is usually detected so late in the game, and the earlier you start managing with diet the slower the disease progresses.

I'm not saying this is your problem, but it is one possibility that's worth looking into with your vet.

Also check the thyroid level. Hyperthyroidism can cause increased drinking and peeing and often occurs at about this age.
