Kyndra has bleeding tumors on her feet from the lung-digit cancer and have been managed with bandaging at home. Tonight I'd removed one partially just so her leg could "breathe" and the rest was secure. She was sleeping, but when I checked back she had gotten it off, which then allows her to lick, thus they bled - she lost a lot of blood - please don;t ask "how much" as I have no way to gauge.

I quickly re-bandaged (which involves compression), but soon after she went to the box, pooped outside it, then lay down (she doesn't go very far these days so that part was not unusual, but she has always made it to the box). She was panting and had some labored breathing (no respiratory symptoms from cancer so far). I checked BG and it was 429 so gave her insulin even thought she had only licked a bit of squash baby food (treat after bandage). Just FYI, Her BG has been fairly stable thru most of this.

I just spent about 45 minutes laying with her and she seems ok, but still concerned about the blood loss tonight until I can call my vet in a.m. Anything I can do or give her??

saorry for popping in from time to time - just trying to cope these days...

thanks
Bonnie

Unless it was a really large amount of blood I think the lack of energy/fast breathing is probably from the high blood sugar and giving her the insulin should help. She's obviously got a lot going on and it could also be related to her lung cancer or a secondary infection that could also elevate her blood sugars. Is there an emergency coverage of ER vet that you could call for advice?

She seems better/OK now, just staying on the couch in the a/c and sort of dozing. This was the first time she has been this distraught (physically) and since it happened just after all the bleeding I was concerned. Sometimes there is a lot of bleeding when bandages are first removed, but I am right there and it is stopped quickly. I felt terrible that I left her - first time I left her alone with 1/2 bandage - should have known better. She has gotten very good at getting off my "almost vet-like" handi-work.

Her BG spiked a week or two ago but we adjusted. Because she does not eat at regular times she is not getting it regularly so a lot of testing. You are probably right that it was from the BG. there is a 24 hour vet (they are an hour away). I was going to call them if her symptoms didn't subside (but also knew I could get some quick replies here and the cancer forum).

You'll need to assess quality of life.

When Norton was growing anemic from his intestinal cancer blood loss, we helped him cross the bridge. it was a heart breaking decision, but he was just getting weaker and beginning to suffer.

yes, I am well aware of this. The blood loss from the tumors is managed (last night was an exception as explained), but it is clear the cancer is now getting the upper hand. I beleive I'll be making the decision soon. It is a difficult one to make, but her comfort is what is important, not mine.

thanks
