Heating rice in sock

Hey guys, some people responded to my last post and I still have to answer (have been a little sick myself the last few days).

Anyway, the sugar dance has weird moves, up and down. Right now something that makes me laugh just happened though of course in reality it is not funny. I started using rice in a sock to heat up Boongie's ears for it makes it much easier to get a blood drop. I usually cool the sock down a bit for my microwave is quite powerful. Anyway, I heated this particular batch of rice just once before, earlier today for 1 minute. Well before one minute was up, I took a peep and there was a big hole in the sock, charcoal, and lots of smoke. I didn't see any flames and tossed it in the garbage and swept up the rice (Boongie came running to investigate of course when the rice scattered out of the sock all over the floor). I went upstairs to look for a clean, lone sock (I've been going through an organization phase the last few months and have nothing unmatching) and my mother came down intrigued by this burning. She opened the trash can and it was still smoking and she got angry and said it could have set a fire and goodness knows which family members she will tell. Does the rice always burn at some point? I tried 30 seconds now and didn't have to cool it as much. Thanks. Gurmit

When I used to use the rice sock, I'd only heat it for 15-20 seconds. 20 seconds if Mikey was in a mood and I knew it was going to take me a while to get situated for the testing and 15 seconds if he was standing around waiting for me to test him so he could eat. Once his ears learned to bleed, I no longer had to use the rice sock.

NEver had that happen, but yes, you can smell it cooking. Might be a good idea to change the rice every couple months or so. How long are you cooking it for anyway? I always set it for 15 seconds and feel, it needs to be warmer than another few seconds after that.

I also use oatmeal instead of rice - I couldn't stand the smell of the cooked rice and oatmeal was just a bit more appealing...you can also try dried beans too...

Thanks KPassa and Hilary,

I was heating the thing for 1 minute and was just using it for the second time when it burnt. I will go to 15 seconds. Thanks so much for the tip and that I can use other stuff too. Gurmit
