Hi all,

Question about HBP and BG's......does the HBP affect Calley's BG's? She has been real high the past week....mid 300's and higher.

Second.....how quickly with HBP meds take affect? Calley seems to be sleeping all day and peeing very little. When do I start worrying that she is lethargic? Is she sleeping so much because she is afraid to get off the couch since she can't see? Or is she sleeping so much because the BP meds(only two doses so far) are making her extra tired? I have seen her yawn....something that I don't think I have seen her do much before.

Thoughts?

Thanks everyone

I don't know anything specific to HBP meds but does the liquid or pill have any sugar or carbs like maltodextrine in its make up? If so that can cause the BG to go up.

I remember you mentioned Calley had a bit of a fever - maybe that is connected to her higher BGs and being a bit tired? How is her appy and that sort of thing?

Trix's high BP doesn't seen to affect her numbers, but I'm sure this is another area where each cat can be different.

Another factor is that I was at the bottom of a lantus pen yesterday and today I started a new pen...and so far her #'s are lower than this time last night. I had used the old pen for over a month...maybe longer, so maybe the Lantus had become ineffective? So many variables. :(

The HBP meds were mixed with a sugar free compound, so the pharmacist says. I have to go by what he told me.....so I hope he did it right. lol

Can it be possible that the vision can get worse? She is now having trouble finding her food bowl when I put her right in front of it. Maybe she does not like my putting her face practically in it? Maybe I'm doing too much and she just needs to be put in the same room with it and she will do the rest? ACK

All she is doing is sleeping on her new spot on the LR chair. And not a light sleep either. I ran the vacuum a lot today and it didn't wake her at all. She is on .5mL of HBP. Is that known to be a beginning dose? Would two doses affect her so quickly?

Thank you

As to the question about her eating- she is not going into the kitchen today looking for food like she did yesterday and before. I have had to wake her and take her to the testing spot and then into the kitchen to get her insulin and food.

I think I will call the ER vet tomorrow to ask about her being lethargic.

In humans, fatigue can be a side effect of blood pressure meds. It might do the same to some cats.

I think calling the vet tomorrow is a very good idea - the lethargy could be any number of things, including the new meds. Trix is on BP pills as opposed to liquid, so I don't know how to compare the dose. Does the bottle say what the concentration of the med is? Also, does it say which BP med she is on? Trix is on .625mg amlodipine once a day. Many cats need the same dose twice a day (our GA civvie Mario was on it twice a day, as was Trix for a few months.)

I'm not sure when the BP med takes effect but my vet had me come back check about 7-10 days after we started so it must take about that long. Max is lethargic too. Which med are you giving? Max gets 1/2 1.25mg once a day.

We are to go back for a BP check in 7 days....so on Jan 4th. Calley is on Amlodipine once/day. The ER sheet says that Calley is on .625mg daily(formulated into liquid 1.25 mg/ml)..give .5cc daily.

So....what is a cc? the bottle says to give her .5mL. So I am giving it to her with a syringe using half of 1 ml. Is that correct?

Calley is a limp noodle. She does not leave the couch. I pick her up and take her to her food bowl after I test her BG....which is now lower(I think the change to new/fresh Lanus was the answer for the high #s). Then she eats and walks right back to "her" chair and goes back to sleep.

Will call vet tomorrow.

I'm thinking maybe you should have her BP rechecked sooner than next week. It is possible that her dose is too high for her, and she may need even less than what she's getting. It may also take a little while for her to adjust to the meds and maybe that's where the lethargy is coming from, but I have have to admit that Trix started her meds the same time she was very sick with pancreatitis, so I don't have a good reference to compare Calley's behavior too. At the very least, give the vet a buzz tomorrow and see what they say.

1 milliliter (mL) = 1 cubic centimeter (cc)
The preferred unit is mL for liquids.

I agree that I would not wait to have her BP checked. It can be too low. My civvie cat was on amlodipine and he never had any lethargy from it. If you can't rouse her, I'd take her to the ER.

The other thing about compounded meds is they might not have sugar but they might have artificial sweeteners like maltodextrin. That will raise the BG.

Sending Calley many healing vines.
