Having trouble getting blood drops from ears...

The first time I used the lancet that came with the AlphaTrak 2, I had no trouble getting a good blood drop from Sketch's ear. In fact it didn't want to stop bleeding for a minute!

Now a week later I must have tried seven times and only once could I even get a tiny drop of blood, and it wasn't enough. I'm always using setting 1 on the lancet, which is the most shallow setting. It worked the first time last week, but not today. Sketch was remarkable patient and only tried to run away once. But I finally gave up.

So I have two questions:
1. Other than rubbing the ears and having a friend shine a light on the back of the ear so I can see a vein, what tips do you have for getting a proper prick and some blood flow? I actually wondered if some of the time I was either not close enough to the ear, or if the ear was folding up on me or otherwise moving out of the way of the prick.
2. Is it ok to use the Lancet more than once if you have simply not gotten and blood at all and might have missed? I found I could remove the lancet and push it back in and then I could use it again, but I wasn't sure if that was a smart idea or not. The one time I did get blood but it wasn't enough, I did swop out for a fresh lancet for the next attempt.

Backstory:
Sketch was diagnosed recently and after switching to low carb canned food, a week of 1U of Lantus and a week of 1/2 U of Lantus, his numbers looked good enough on the vet's day long blood glucose curve she gave me the ok to take him off insulin and see how he does. His last shot was more than 48 hours ago and the water drinking / peeing symptoms have not returned, so I'm not too concerned about him. Still, I need to get a reading one of these days so I can see if he's in remission or not.

I use setting 4 on my lancet device and Ive reused the lancet. Silver hasn't come to any harm.

I find using a hot bag worked better than just rubbing. You can make your own with and old sock and some rice. Warning it a minute in the microwave will help the blood flow.

Not only did a warming sock work for me but I also found it much easier to use the inside of the ear not the outside. I just turn the end of her ear back over and stick free handed and its works much better for me.
Also, the more you use the lancet the duller it will become and a dull lancet hurts more than a sharp one. I would not use one to much before I replaced with a new one. If it hurts kitty it will just make it harder for them to cooperate! Plus I know that you want it to be as pain free as possible anyway. ~O)

I had a lot of trouble with the ears too. I switched to the foot pads, it's MUCH easier for me and Goof doesn't even flinch when I poke. Before the test, I pick him up and love him up really good. :). While doing this I kind of pull down on his front legs, pulling blood into his paws and give a little rub on each paw as well. I have to lay him on his side and hold him with my forearm, but I can rub his head with that hand so it keeps him calm.

It was a three person job but we finally got enough blood to test BG today (and he was at 79, four days after stopping insulin!).
We warmed the ear with a tiny heating pad and squeezed a bit from the bottom up.
Thanks for your suggestions!

I tried using the lancet, now I just use it to poke the very, very edge of the ear after finding this YouTube video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_zE12-4fVn8. I warm the ear, poke the very edge and rub on either side (above and below) and a good drop forms! I've only been doing this a couple days, but outside the initial try on this position I've always gotten a drop. The inside/outside of ear just seemed to result in annoyed kitty and bruised ear.

Oh that's awesome! We were always trying to get the visible vein on the inside of the ear, a couple of mm from the edge. We will have to try the very edge next time.

As you continue testing on the ear, new capillaries will form in a process called angiogenesis. Over time, this makes it easier to get blood when you test.
