havent dropped one though...

Re: Have you ever dropped your vial on the floor and broken

Buy the lantus solostar pens that come in plastic, are big, easy to handle & last a while..They cost like $25.00 and I get them from Canada--Using our regular syringes, they are much better than vials, or cartridges.--That;s my humble opinion!

Re: Have you ever dropped your vial on the floor and broken

I've dropped a pen but never broken it. The pens are like mini vials AND they are in a plastic pen so they are more protected. In the long run they are cheaper since they last a lot longer.

Re: Have you ever dropped your vial on the floor and broken

i haven't but sure sympathize. I did leave one out overnight and had to go buy another vial. that made me cry buckets.

i just got the solostar pen prescription from the vet today and am going to try that instead of the vial. the vial was $111 and the pen will be $41 from a local pharmacy. mine won't sell a single pen, but another local one will. and there's a $25 coupon online (google lantus solostar coupon) - you might be committed on this one, but perhaps you can try the pen on your next one.

Re: Have you ever dropped your vial on the floor and broken

I 3rd the Solostar pens. Even if it did break(unlikely), you didn't waste a lot and if you buy the 5 pack, you'll have more handy.

Re: Have you ever dropped your vial on the floor and broken

Yep, I buy them on line from Canada for $100-110 for 5 pens--last a long time!!

Re: Have you ever dropped your vial on the floor and broken

How do the pens work? I am going to get the vial from my vet tomorrow as I am desperate.... I called CVS and they don't have the same glargine... I read the #'s off the top and the guy there said it was the same but he had different #'s.....

Re: Have you ever dropped your vial on the floor and broken

There are insulin bottle protectors you can buy. They're made of a soft cushy material that slips over the insulim bottle and prevents breakage if you accidentally drop it. I had a neoprene one that I bought from Hocks.com, http://hocks.com/hocks-healthcare/hocks ... ories.html (at the very bottom. The "long" fits Lantus). Or you can make your own using bubble wrap or wrapping a paper towel around the bottle etc.

But as others have said, the Lantus pens and cartridges are more cost effective and the entire box will last you at least 5 months.

Just stick the insulin syringe into the rubber stopper at the end, just like you would with an insulin bottle:

Huh? Lantus is Lantus. There is no substitute or generic version. Did you accidentally read off the lot number from the box? Lot numbers can vary.

Re: Have you ever dropped your vial on the floor and broken

I'm going to go w/the others and say get the pen. I did a transport for Twinkie and Beasley (Dian and Wheezer is fostering them) and had to give them their insulin while on the Pennsylvania turnpike, well, on the rest stop, not on the pike itself, lol. They were such good boys, but when I set my pen down, it rolled and fell on the concrete ground. The pen really saved the day because nothing broke. Keep in mind, though, that I use Lev and that is not as fragile as Lantus, so I'm not sure if the fall itself would have hurt the insulin if it was Lantus.

Re: Have you ever dropped your vial on the floor and broken

Hey, good to know! I am going to around to pharmacy's this morning and find out who has the pen. I got a new bottle from my vet. I told them I am a klutz on a occasion and need to have a backup. The pen will become my daily and the bottle can be my backup. I probably did read the lot # (above the word Lantus on the box) but the guy on the phone was reading me a number and I presumed that it had something to do with the insulin, I am still so new to this that I definitely don't want to get the wrong thing!

Re: Have you ever dropped your vial on the floor and broken

just so you know, once you get start using the lantus bottle, whether as a back-up or primary, it will begin to age and you'll have something more than a month before you have to toss it. my point being, maybe since you've got it and started using it, you would want to just keep using it til it expires and have the pen as a back-up.

some pharmacies will break up the group of 5 pens and just sell you one. some won't. i called around to find one that would.

Re: Have you ever dropped your vial on the floor and broken

I asked my vet about that this morning.... she seemed to have no idea about it aging..... I broke my bottle last nite and it was only a month old so I guess that was fortunate! I just hope I don't break the bottle between now and then! Some people say you can use the bottles for a few months... my vet doesn't stock glargine so to get it from them I have to order it! isn't that weird?
