Have I screwed up, again...

Hi you wonderful people,
You all helped me so much in learning how to test Simon (Simmie) and while it's not perfect yet, it's going pretty well for just a few days. With that said, his BG is still very high and I feel it might be even higher because of my panic in purchasing a meter without doing the necessary research first. His BG is running between 269 to 350 with variations based on when he has eaten and time of testing. As I was doing more research I realized I should not have purchased the True reader from CVS because of inaccurate readings. So then I got all anxious again and ordered the Relion Prime from Amazon (it's arriving today) with a bunch of lancets and strips for lots o' money...it was promoted as requiring very little blood, .5 microliter. Have I screwed up again? Is this too big a sample for a kitty?

I know I should take him back to the vet to get either a curve or Fructosamine done before I adjust his insulin downward but we had a bit of a disagreement and I wanted to gather more info on home testing and the methyl-B12 in pill form before I saw her (last post I explained that she wasn't very knowledgeable on Methyl-B12 and gave me terrible attitude). And I wanted a better reading myself. Anyway, did I get the wrong meter again? If it is ok, how much could I adjust his insulin myself once I get a consistent readings?

One last thing, I have moved him from a mix of wet and dry M/D to Purina One pates and he loves it and he doesn't seem to be peeing or drinking as much.

Love

Re: Have I screwed up, again...whoops!

In my original post this morning I said "to adjust his insulin downward" when I meant UPWARD. Sorry, it's starting out to be a crappy day...Simmie was not interested in getting his test this morning ... but he did get his treat after I got an er on my meter. He's ok with that. :-)

The Prime is fine.

Be sure to get 26-28 gauge lancets for getting the blood droplet.

A dab of Neosporin ointment (not creme) w/ pain relief, applied a minute or two before testing, then wiped off, reduces the annoyance of testing and helps the blood bead up.

Hi BJM,

Thanks for the response and before you wrote I went to read Start Low and Go Slow. Very helpful. I guess I should do more reading and less posting. Until I get situated better. I would hate to be an obnoxious member.

I do use the Neosporin with pain reliever on Simmie. This morning was purely my fault as I didn't position him properly. He was so relaxed next to me I thought I would give it a 'shot' or prick as it were, while he was so content. You would never know I have had so many 'kids' in my lifetime with health issues that I always managed and managed well.

Also, I forgot who it was but in my initial post someone recommended me being more gentle with my vet as they have so many medical issues to deal with and aren't always up to date and could use some help. I never responded but I really did appreciate the advice and I understand it. I would prefer she simply log on to this site and select the topics I referenced but that's merely a dream. I know how busy she is in the practice and also has a 8 month old baby at home. Yet, I always believe ongoing research for common ailments in their practice, and unfortunately with a lot of overfeeding nowadays, FMD is more common and I expect contemporary vets to be more aware. I don't know. This is probably a topic for another category on the site.

Thanks again.

I see no reason for a vet visit. However, I recommend that your track your BG and does and other things in a Google Docs spreadsheet and provide a link to that in your signature like many (but not me) in their signature. Maybe a dose decrease is required. For how to make the spreadsheet see:

You know what, I think you are right. About taking Simmie into the vet. I have already made the appointment but I am going to cancel it. Some of my kids didn't mind the vet at all, and in fact, one of my current kids, Murphy, thinks that everyone there is just swell and he is a favorite. But Simmie HATES it. He lets them do whatever they want but he is now terrified of the cat carrier and cries the entire way there. I think it must affect his BG levels from the stress.

I'll keep him on his current 4 units until I get the new RelionPrime in and do my own curve. That makes much better sense, thanks. As long as I feel like I have the right knowledge to adjust his insulin properly, without doing him harm, we both will be very happy. Thanks for setting me back on the right track.

I will eventually work with the spreadsheet BTW...right now I'm just using the log that comes with the meter.

Hugs,

Lydette,

I would really encourage to start with the spreadsheet right away. I started out just charting it myself and relaying the numbers in my posts to get advice. It just became difficult when needing help. You will be able to get much more accurate advice/assistance once the spreadsheet is up and running. as the more knowledgeable members will be able to look at the spreadsheet, as they know what all the colors mean, and give advise based on that.

I know that it is a lot of things to do at once, but trust me, I LOVE my spreadsheet now!

Even being a newbie myself, but looking at Skooter's color coded spreadsheet has helped me be able to look at his trends and notice changes. I am then able to confirm that with the super smart people here and it has helped me learn a lot about Skooter's cycles.

Just thought I would throw that out there.....

Happy Testing!!

Great advise and I will start doing that when my new meter comes in! I'm pretty good with spreadsheets so I'll go and take a look in a few minutes.

Hugs,
Lydette and Simmie!
