my vet told me it was perfectly fine to shoot air and insulin back into the lantus pen. now i know this is not the case. everything my vet has told me so far has been wrong. if i get an air bubble, ill shoot it back into the pen along with some insulin. should i get a new pen? i just got it two weeks ago and itd be a shame to have to throw it away bc my vet told me the wrong things to do :(

Hi! I wouldn't worry about it, but just continue doing it the better way now that you know. I know what it's like to be quite aggravated at a vet for their lack of FD expertise. It will be interesting to see if anyone believes you should get rid of the pen.

Not sure ab the pen ( I know someone will know) but what I do know is you’ve been doing the best you know per your vet . Do not feel badly as most vets are not fully trained to handle diabetes. I’ll tag a few who I’m sure will know . Bless you for doing all you are for Scratches:bighug: @carfurby @MrWorfMen's Mom @Nan & Amber

I would think the insulin should be fine. Just don’t put any more air into it. I used to do that before I knew better not to. Make sure you store it in the frig, not the door of the frig.

It’s ok, I did this too, on the advice of the techs at the shelter. The insulin still worked, but I don’t do this now.

I think those pens can take a lot more abuse than we're aware of or would recommend. People carry them in their non air-conditioned purses and pockets - albeit for only a month - however they're tossed around and treated terribly..I doubt that a little air is going to ruin the insulin in the pen...so keep it until you see obvious cloudiness or other signs that it may be going bad. I think you'll be fine :)

I've done it for 2 months before realizing I shouldn't. Also, my vial is in the fridge door... I thought I ruined it all. After 4 months, it's still clear and working since there is movement in Macka's cycles.

What is different about storing in fridge as opposed to door?
The door is warmer, because you open and close it. I stored our insulin in a cup in the middle of the middle shelf in the fridge. If you have a cranky fridge that freezes towards the back then be aware of where you place your insulin. You can afford a frozen leftover portion, but that insulin is "gold".

Also, much less chance of the insulin vial (if you are using a vial) falling out of the door and smashing on the floor.
