Hi everyone,
It has been a long time since I have been to the board. I now have a new foster Smittie that is on Prozinc. Know nothing about it so am gathering info to make sure I am handling her correctly. Might have lots of questions.

Hi Eliz,
I did just downloaded that sticky and have been reading it. Smittie was on 5u at the rescue. Not sure what they were feeding her but after I picked him up her bs fell like a rock. Last night, vet suggested 4u which I did do. Lowest number last night was 52. This AM I shot 1.5 because I was not going to be home all day and I wanted to be safe. depending on what her numbers are tonight, I will shoot 2u.

You might consider starting over at one unit - especially if you are changing the food to wet low carb. Then increase every few cycles if needed. Safer to slowly increase than to give too much). It will be interesting to see how the 1.5 worked.

See my signature link Secondary Monitoring Tools for some additional assessments you can make to evaluate her health.

Right Sue! It's better that he numbers be too high for day or two than risk being to low. Low is dangerous and 52 is low , much lower and kitty could go hypo. Have you switched her to only canned food? If so, that's really low carb food, 5 units would be an awful lot of insulin. Perhaps a call to the shelter would be in order, especially since much of their food is donated and the cheapest stuff people can find. It makes them feel good to help, and thank God that they do, but usually they think they can feed more kitties that way.

Unfortunately because Smittie is a foster, I don't have the option of starting over on the dose. I did convince the director to let me lower the dose to 3.5 instead of
keeping with the 5u. she is doing better on it. I don't think the director understands the bounce concept. Hopefully she will catch on because I am to get another
diabetic foster in a couple weeks.

BJM has some really good info on dosing and care, if you could get it and have the director read it I'm sure it'd give her a better understanding.

Instructions are here.

Understanding the spreadsheet/grid:

The colored headings at the top are the ranges of glucose values. They are color-coded to clue you in as to meaning.

Each day is 1 row. Each column stores different data for the day.

From left to right, you enter
the Date in the first column
the AMPS (morning pre-shot test) in the 2nd column
the Units given (turquoise column)

Then, there are 11 columns labeled +1 through +11
If you test at +5 (5 hours after the shot), you enter the test number in the +5 column
If you test at +7 (7 hours after the shot), you enter the test number in the +7 column
and so on.

Halfway across the page is the column for PMPS (evening pre-shot)
To the right is another turquoise column for Units given at the evening shot.

There is second set of columns labeled +1 through +11
If you snag a before bed test at +3, you enter the test number in the +3 column.

We separate day and night numbers like that because many cats go lower at night.

It is merely a grid for storing the info; no math required.
