Has This Happened To Anyone Else...?

I went to give Blackie her shot, and she growled at me. Then bit me. I like to lay her on the right side so that I could shoot her on the left, hopefully in the flank, and hopefully without any pain. Well, she growled at me before I shot her, then bit me. Thankfully, she got my elbow instead. However, I didn't get the shot in, and did it again. And, she did it again... Growled and bit me. On the elbow. Again. I'm right handed, and shooting her on the right side isn't an option. Been there, done that, and got bitten. Hard. Hence the protection of the elbow. She seemed a bit 'tudy this evening, but I'm not sure what's going on. If this keeps up, I won't be able to give her the insulin. And making her into a burrito, and/or restraining her will not work (as she comes and rubs on my slipper right now) as that'll stress her, and myself out. I'm hoping that this is only a 1 time thing. Normally, she stretches herself as I lay her on the side, but this time she didn't.

So, has this happened to anyone else, and if so, what did you do?

Thank you in advance for the advice, help, insight, what have you.

Oh no! Blackie is telling you that she doesn't want any more pokies and stickies!!! Best you tell her that unless she gets Mr. P working, that will not happen!!
I have never had that happen with Spot, btw.

Jenks has his ornery days and does this too. There are times when I insert the needle and he swats, bites, and tries to roll over. Sometimes, he even gets feisty as I'm trying to get the right hold on his neck skin. I figure that, like us, he might have his grouchy days. Or maybe an earlier poke left a spot more sensitive than usual. But yeah, you're certainly not alone!

Shadow did this to me a couple of times....
I was shooting in the flank for the first half of our juice days..... and once Shadow decided to hiss.... and bite and run....
had me really nervous....
my solution was to let her know that at shot time , I AM the alpha... not her.
( she is the alpha in our household of pets? She has never.let me brush her..... fights hard if I have to trim her butt or even a knot from her fur.
But since I knew we had to do the insulin, I pursued her and fussed at her and told her she HAD to do this.
And she seemed to get the message. She relented. I also moved her spot to her scruff.

I had always put some raw shrimp in her food at shot time to distract her.... and by the end, she was getting less distractable.
I had to get someone else to hold her down a few times.....
the scruff is where I currently give her adequan shot.... since it's 25 u on the insulin syringes.... and I have to shoot it slowly.

I was believing that it was critical to shoot in the flank for better absorption.... and someone corrected me that it still gets absorbed.
I think that's why shadow seemed to nadir at onset.... the absorption was quicker ....

Zener growled and hissed at me this morning! He was outside and had things to do so I think that's why. He's done it occasionally before but not often. We shoot in the scruff.

Hi Angela!
I am dealing with a sort of similar situation with Billie. At first, she was really good about sitting and letting me poke her ear for tests, but lately she has been yelling at me/jerking her head away, which makes me feel awful about it. She hasn't tried to bite me (that's more my civie's style...) but it does seem like she's getting sick of the routine. I've been trying to give her extra love to compensate, and trying to make the pokes as quick as possible. Today, I got her a new catnip toy which made her happy.

I don't know what the difference is between giving a shot in the flank and in the neck/shoulder, but Billie doesn't seem to mind the shot in the skin or fat on the back of her neck/between her shoulders. I usually sneak up on her when she is eating and distracted, make a "tent" with her skin, and "shoot through the tent" which is what the vet showed me to do. She does tense up when she knows it's coming, but she'll get right back to eating.

Good luck with Blackie!!

Wow, is there something in the air? Max tried to bite me for the third time this morning. It actually caused me to release the insulin and I refilled it and then got myself all worried that maybe somehow he got some. I don't get it as usually he doesn't even seem to mind it at all. I was thinking if it happens again I might have to shoot in the scruff.

I guess I wasn't alone, then. I'm sorry you all had to go through the same thing that I went through last night. I discussed it with DH and he was worried that we would have to move the shot time to 7:00 instead. Not happening. Yeah, Blackie made me nervous last night, and this morning, it was as normal, and all good. No biting, or growling, or hissing or nothing. She did stretch like normal, and I was able to shoot in the flank. I may have hit a sore spot, or something, or perhaps she was simply being a testy little one. I have noticed with myself that I've been getting quicker with shooting. Probably a good thing. Hey.. Isn't Shark Week coming up soon in August? (hearing Jaws music)

I used to shoot the insulin in the scruff, until I noticed that her skin was thickening up, so I stopped.

Oliver bit my hands several times when I was trying to shoot him in the flank. I switched to the scruff and he was fine - didn't even flinch when I gave him his shot.

Trix never actually bit me, but I did have some owie shots at times where she did whip her head around as a warning - even after doing shots for years. I guess there are a few spots that are super-sensitive, even if you've been shooting in the same ballpark for ages. IN fact, one day last week when we were doing her fluids, I hit an odd spot with the needle and her skin started massively twitching there, even though it was the same general area I always use (within a couple square inches). I had to stop the flow and re-stick the poor girl in a different spot.

Max was threatening me before I even shot. All I was doing each time was trying to get skin and move all his fur out of the way. What could that be about?
