Re: Has anyone used Welactin for omega-3 fatty acid suppleme
I peeked at the product online. There are several issues to consider...
1. Sourcing. One of the biggest concerns for fish oil is the sourcing. What is tricky is that if a fish oil is manufactured in the US, they can claim that it was US sourced, even if the fish itself came from China. I think it is far more likely that problematic fish are being used in pet oils than in human. While the product states that it was molecularly distilled, there isn't any sort of regulation regarding what specific production elements must occur in order to use that description on a label.
2. Product contents/concentrations. There isn't much consensus in the veterinary community about what an appropriate dosage for EPA/DHA would be for felines, so no thoughts there. If I were you, I would go with a capsule, not a pump. the pump liquids are notorious for going rancid... I somewhat suspect that may have been the trigger for Willie's initial pemphigus flare-up. Also, you should verify the total amount of fish oil in contrast to just the EPA/DHA amounts. If the bulk of the product is filler oil, that can add contaminates and/or lots of additional calories, which you may not want for Champ.
Do you have a Costco nearby?
This product is a bit higher in concentration, so you could just use a bit of oil from a capsule each day, and kept in the fridge/freezer, they would last you a long time. If you read the comments, people have contacted the company for information re: sourcing, and they are using appropriate fish from appropriate locations (you want fish oil sourced from smaller fish... the lower on the food chain, the better. the larger fish have eaten the smaller fish, and they will have larger concentrations of mercury and other contaminates as a result).
Essentially, you're not getting any ingredients in the pet product that you wouldn't be also getting in a human grade product. And from a practical/legal perspective, there is a lot more on the line for companies if a human grade product makes people sick than if a pet grade product makes pets sick, so there is a greater likelihood that the products are safe. Willie and I use the same fish oil... his goes into his raw food recipe. I currently use
OmegaVia, though once I'm out, I'll be giving the Nature's Bounty from Costco a try as it has similar sourcing and concentrations at a much lower price.
PM me if you want any additional information!
