Miss kitty has hardly been eating lately and I'm concerned.she has always been a grazer a few bites then back later on for a few more but now she don't come back or no interest in it at all.i have been leaving the food down cause she isn't eating much to balance out the insulin.she did a very small stool too.never seen her poop that small before lol.what should I do in this situation?im getting afraid to give the insulin.

Any time a cat isn't feeling well, it's a good idea to get a ketone test in

Most of the time they'll show up in cats in higher numbers, but they can show up in regulated cats too. Here are some Urine Testing Tips for you to try

Have you tried warming her food up a little or feeding her from your finger or a spoon?

Please try adding Fortiflora to the food, bonito flakes, tuna water, chicken baby food, etc. to get your kitty to eat. Just a couple days of what you're describing above can be very bad for a cat. You don't want to risk hepatic lipidosis; so if you have to force feed with a syringe, that would be much better than her not eating. Also, I would call your vet and ask for mirtazapine or cyproheptadine (appetite stimulants).
Cats have to eat to keep their liver healthy.
And as Chris said above, testing for ketones is very important. Finding anything more than trace ketones in the urine is an emergency and you'll need to go to the vet.

During those 2 months she was eating like crazy from the diabetes but losing rapidly.i took her to the vet and she was put on insulin.she only has had eating problems since I started the insulin a few days ago.i have been doing things to encourage her to eat and I manage to get her to eat some food.but I feel like she isn't getting enough.i don't want her losing weigh too fast cause like you said she could get fatty liver disease.

I would call your vet and see what he/she suggests. You definitely don't want her to go very long without eating!

I'd strongly suggest taking Miss Kitty to the vet to make sure she's not dehydrated nor has another medical issue going on. Plus have her checked for ketones. You can also check for ketones at home with ketones strips. Ketones strips are available wherever diabetic supplies are sold. We have tips on how to test for that if you need help.

Does Miss Kitty have a favorite treat? Maybe you could crush it up and sprinkle over her food. As the others have said, you don't want the no eating to go on more than a day or two, could be very dangerous. A vet visit is in order.

Hey Beth, just checking in today to see how Miss Kitty is. Hope she is eating.....
Yes she is eating again.thank goodness!for a few days there she wasn't eating very much and got me worried.when can you tell if insulin needs to increase?vet said miss kitty might need to be increased from 0.5 to 1unit if 0.5 don't work but not sure how to tell and when.she hasn't been on insulin very long but she still has high sugar every time I check it.

Oh, good, I am so glad she is eating! Hey Beth, could you refresh my memory on what insulin Miss Kitty is on? It would be helpful if you could put her insulin, what kind of meter you use, weight, when she diagnosed, food she eats, and any other information you'd like to share with the members in your signature. This will help the members to be able to give you dosing advice. Here's a link on how to set up your signature.

So when you need advice on dosing as you do now, go there and in the Title put something like Need dosing Advice so the people there will get back to you ASAP.

Good job Beth getting the signature up and going. That will really help people here help you. I noticed you are feeding Simply Nourish dry. I went to the food chart that we use to see what the carb count is. I could not find it on the chart. Usually dry food is really high is carbs. Do you know what the carb count is? The FF classics is good, and the 9lives needs to be the Pates to be the lower ones. Just double check that because if anything is higher than 10% in carbs, it could keep the BG high. Just a thought. The link is below.

I only feed the pate 9lives wet and ff classics.they never would eat anything that has pieces in it.i switched to simply nourish source just for unless I find something even better.trying to switch them over but they love that dry food.it is high protein grain free.40% protein and 5.5% fiber it meets AAFCO values and has deboned chicken and veggies etc in it.her sugar came down a lot just switching from that diet cat food I had them on.

I tried to just give wet and she got so upset and crying wanting her dry food.i didn't want her to get stressed or stop eating wet all together.she is already upset about not getting treats she likes.almost all have sugar etc in them.she loves sweets.yogurt candy etc and vegetables.my cats both love things like that and when I tried giving them meat they always looked at me like I was crazy and walk away.the only meat I could get them to get was tuna and some canned cat foods.very very picky and strange lol

Have you tried Bonita Flake? Most cats love them also the freeze dried chicken pieces, Pure Bites from Pet Smart or Stella and Chewy's . I give Bubba a dry piece as a poke treat, and he likes them. For a couple of days he wasn't interested in them but he's back to liking them again. You know cats........:banghead:

Oh good. If you can transition off the dry (I know it is hard) you will see her BG come down even more. :cat:
PS You are being wise in giving her some dry as you saw how upset she got and since she just did a no-eat strike on you, it's best to give them whatever it takes to make them eat. Just try to limit it and push the wet to help keep her numbers lower. And the Lantus forum will be able to help you with dosing for Miss Kitty.

That's how Bubba was for months after the diabetes DX. He's hanging with the family more and back to sleeping with me part of the night. The sleeping pattern change is definitely an indicator of how they are feeling.

My non-diabetic cat is very, very picky; so I appreciate Petsmart's return policy... Basically, they will take back any food or treat, even if the bag is open, if your cat doesn't like it or the product doesn't do what you wanted. With a receipt is best, but even without one, they will take most things back. I didn't want you to get stuck with stuff you couldn't use b/c the kitties wouldn't eat it.

Cat Girl:

Have you tested her blood sugar? Maybe it has gone too low or is too high. She may need to get to the vet. Has she ever had constipation problems? One of my cats needs laxatone every other day due to constipation problems. She began to get very sick from it and the vet needed to give her a shot to get things moving, but with laxatone every other day, she has had no more trouble.

Try 1 tbsp. on solid packed pumpkin (not the pie filling kind as it is full of sugar) mixed into her wet food each time you feed her. It will help with constipation or diarrhea.

Hi Beth, glad Miss Kitty is eating again. If you choose to use Laxatone, read the label. Many kinds have sugars in them. Not good for diabetes. My cat gets constipated too, and I've started feeding him canned pumpkin-NOT the pie filling. If Miss Kitty won't eat that mixed in her food, you can try Miralax. I use that too, 1/8 tsp, mixed in the food and add some extra water.

Thanks.always knew what to use for diarrhea keopectate with the aspirin added but constipation in cats didn't know much for.

I don't think kaopectate is safe for cats, and neither is aspirin -apparently kaopectate used to be, but the formulation was changed and now cats face the danger of salicylate toxicity

Keopectate change and started making their products with aspirin in them awhile back but now they are starting to make some without aspirin again.so the kind without salicylate is safe to use.my mom has gotten some recently that is salicylate free and uses it on her cats when they get diarrhea.she has over 20 cats!cat farm lol
