Latest on Hardey. Ultrasound done. More than likely either Inflammatory bowel disease or cancer. Only way to know for sure is to do exploratory surgery (which I don't want to put him through). Treatment options are steroids for the IBS which is not an option due to diabetes (there is another medication that works sometimes that is not a steroid, but I can't remember the name of right now) or chemo. Vet wants to try to get him eating again with appetite stimulant. If we can get him eating again, that gives me time to make a decision about his quality of life and where to go from here.

Sending tons of appy vines for Hardey. What appy stimulant is he getting? We give cyproheptadine for Zener and it just takes a tiny piece, like 1/32 of a pill. We also give ondansetron for nausea, you might ask about that too. Big hugs.

Sending loads of healing & appy vines for Hardey. We've used cyproheptadine as well for appy & always had positive results. Hope his appetite improves quickly.

Thanks for the good thoughts guys. We need all we can get. Hardey is glad to be home and just ate some albacore tuna with the juice for me. Wish he could get more calories/nutrition from real tuna. :( Won't touch FF or Friskies right now. Hopefully the pill will kick in and he'll eat real cat food.

Vet prescribed Mirtazapine 15mg (1/4 tablet every 72 hours). She said if this one didn't work there were others to try. I'll ask about the nausea pill too. Hadn't thought of that.

Sending good appy vines for Hardey. Mirtazapine is actually an anti-psychotic and cats can get agitated on it. Some call it Meowzapine! Paws crossed for a good outcome.

I'm sorry about the U/S results...it's frustrating when they aren't completely definitive, but it sounds like you've got plans in place!

One thing to keep in mind...sometimes it's important to take measures to control one health issue, then adjust the diabetes treatment accordingly. There are a couple kitties here who are on steroids (Melissa's Tarragon for asthma, and Mariko's Lucy for IBD), because those health issues take priority. To compensate, they adjust the insulin dosage as needed. Steroids are not ideal for a diabetic (or anyone), but sometimes they really are the best answer.

Sending healing vines your way!!

I could not agree with Amy more. If steroids will help, you can work the dose of insulin around the steroid. There are a number of kitties here where that's what's been needed. It's really a non-issue.

I would also look into budesonide and that might be the steroid the vet is referring to. It has less systemic effects but targets IBD. I agree that it would be worth it and if it raises the BG, you can control it with insulin if need be.

Sending healing vines and prayers.

It just really stinks that we just got him into remission. How hard is it to get a kitty back OTJ if we do steroids and then stop them?
