Hardey's numbers going up....

When it rains, it pours... ugh! Not sure why Hardey has decided now is the time to start having higher numbers. I just tested him and he was 132. That is the highest it has ever been since I began home testing. Yesterday was close to the same. Because he's so finicky and has turned his nose up at all FF pates and Friskies special diets that he has been eating since June, I've had to get a bit more inventive. He has been eating (and enjoying) the FF trout feast and tuna/chicken. Both have about 7 to 8% carbs. I know this is a bit higher than the other ones I had him on, but not by that much.... or at least I thought. Anyway, I changed him over to FF flaked fish/shrimp and he loves it. It has 0% carbs (I know, it's high in phosphate, but I can only deal with one issue at a time). He has only been on the flaked fish/shrimp since yesterday at noon. So, it's been about 36 hours. How long does it take to bring down BG after you stop feeding higher carbs?

I'm probably just being a paranoid mom, but I'm going out of town on Friday and won't be back until Monday. My 21 year old nephew is staying with Hardey and I"m trying to keep the amount of instructions to a minimum.

I guess I'm just looking for someone to say that 132 isn't that bad of a number, even if it is creeping up. What else can I do?

Re: Hardy's numbers going up....

A single number that's borderline fits in with meter variance ( +/- 20%)
and just occasional spikes aren't something to get worked up.
Although I sure know how you feel.

Mine had a 170 a few weeks ago, which seems to have been a one time thing, but it got me monitoring a bit more, always watchful for a change.
With canned food, I would expect to see the numbers drop after a few hours of eating it. Canned food goes thru the system quicker.

Just try to keep watching, maybe throw in an extra test here and there to make sure Hardy's not sneaking up slowly.

Re: Hardy's numbers going up....

Obviously, Hardy is wanting your complete and undivided attention!

Some kitties will experience slightly higher BG numbers with any change in food. I would give this a couple of days to see if things fall back into place. If these numbers persist, I'd get him checked out by your vet. There could be an infection brewing or he might need to have a dental. Any infection or inflammation, including gingivitis, can cause numbers to be higher.

Re: Hardy's numbers going up....

Thanks guys. I feel better. I actually just tested him again and got a 91. Go figure. I'll just stick with the FF fish/shrimp and see how he does. I worry about the high phosphate levels though. I need to find one that is flaked like fish, low in carbs (0 - 4%), and low in phosphate than 701. Any suggestions? Willing to change food types if there is one that he would like.

Take a look at some of the Weruva foods. The Paw Licken' Chicken is shreds if Hardey likes texture. It's low in carbs, phosphorus (it's phosphorus that you need to be concerned with if your worried about kidney issues), and calories. The Steak Frites are 0.05% phosphorus which is about as low as a prescription food for renal issues.

Does it have to be flaked? I use the friskies trout but have to mash it up more and add water so it's little flakes kind of disappear ( sorta)

Go back and look at the shortcut list.
I would suggest giving these a try. You can always go to the company website, click on locator to see what stores near you sell it so you can try one can.

I'm guessing you have a seafood addict.
So I would try the combo varieties that have seafood and poultry or other protein.

Heading to petco now to see what I can find. I always end up staying way too long there and get confused. Lol
I noticed 9 lives has a flaked tuna, tuna and egg, and tuna and cheese that seem low in both. Anyone ever tried these?
