? Hard time handling low numbers

Hi everyone,

will some members her knows Meme’s oral condition from my post on the main form.

she wason pred for a while and her numbers was always high betwen 200-300, at the begining i thought that the pred is the reason but it seems not, I stopped the pred days ago and she was on very low dose and not everyday, her mouth looks much better as the vet said but i am still having hard time getting her numbers down, it seems that all doses was very little and when i did 1 unit she crashed after 3 hours and i have hard time bring her numbers up and it happened for the first time, then she stooped eating. I was so afrain as she stayed low for long time, I rushed her to ER. Vet did physical exam and things seems fine, we back home with some nausea medication and apetite stimulation medication and some antibiotics as she had little fever.

she ate will at the next day so i could give her the shot but then she is off again , refuse eating at all only drinking water.

this is happened to me for the first time, if i fdud low dose it will not work and more make her crash.

I do not know if this high is still due to her mouth inflammation or not, vet asked me to go back to lantus i sulin ( I am using levemir), he thinks the levemir is too strong.

if anyone can help i will be soo happy, i feel that i am losing her.

Hi Sorry you are going through all this and hope Meme feels better soon. I don't have the experience to give advice but just wanted to bump up your post with my comment. I'm sure one of the more experienced folks will weigh in.

I suspect that the stomatitis is giving Meme some problems. The pain and the pred will raise numbers. However, the red is going to help with the inflammation. You can always work the insulin dose around the steroid. Also, do NOT stop a steroid all at once. It sounds like you tapered the dose. It's critical that you gradually lower the dose. Also, her not eating may be due to her mouth hurting.

Did the vet suggest any pain meds? I think you were OK on the 0.75u dose. Meme's numbers didn't drop low until you increased to 1.0u.

will her gum looking much better that is why the vet told me to give the pred maybe every two days or when ever she nedded, i did not know that i should not stop it all at once. I raised the dose because she stayed all high even on 0.75.

they do not have Bup for pain and other pain medication make her vomitting so he gave us very low dose of oral Metacam which i do not prefer but i had to use something.

If you've only given a couple of doses of red, it's likely OK to stop. However, if you've been using it for at least a week, I'd err on the side of tapering.

Yesterday when we went to the ER the vet said that there is no reason to rush as her gum is way better but he is not with us at home, I can see her have diffcult time chewing food even if there is no inflammation like before, she had little lump on the back of her mouth from the inflammation and i know that it cause her discomfort, i asked the vet if this can be removed by surgery and he said if they have to then yes it can be done.

I emailed her main vet today asking her that i want at least a partial mouth extraction since the inflammation is on her back teeth only. I am waiting for the reply now

I can see her drooling when she is walking even if she feels ok, this drooling starting since her last low number crashing which was ladt week.
