All the sugar cats need to celebrate😺

There's a new guideline on managing diabetes in cats:

iCatCare 2025 consensus guidelines on the diagnosis and management of diabetes mellitus in cats
https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/full/10.1177/1098612X251399103

There's a print out for vets to give to clients but I can't get the screenshot with the link to attach or the file. I'll try later.

Only skimmed, but seems like a lot of good information in there. Interesting about no guidance on the oral meds and remission still.

I could have guessed that based off how often the CGM post has been linked recently. Hopefully manually testing is still emphasized.

I hope vets aren't pushing CGMs because it's more convenient for owners and there's no hassle of ear pricking and "hurting / damaging" the ears. Some vets may conveniently leave out the fact that a CGM has to be replaced every 2 weeks if not sooner and that only they can put a new one on for $$.

There’s no doubt a percentage of diabetic cat owners just want convenience and a set it and forget it kind of care. Sad but just how people are. That’s better than cats being euthanized for a FD diagnosis. Another reason why we need to grow our footprint of this website and try to keep educating more people…

The podcast episode on diabetes is now available on Spotify and wherever you listen to podcasts 😀

I know folks here have mixed feelings on CGMs, but it seems like the MAIN thing vets push is not testing at all, which is way way way worse. So if they switch to recommending CGMs over not testing, I feel like that's a huge improvement.

Ouch. Some cats really will not tolerate manual testing very well, and putting a cat with high BG through a lot of stress trying to get it done is genuinely counterproductive. I tried so hard with my boy four years back after his first diagnosis and we both went through hell. Things got so much better after we stopped.

I still feel really guilty about it, and frankly that's not terribly helpful to either my cat or me! People who use CGMs aren't necessarily being lazy. (My vet is a relatively recent adopter and only prescribes them for people who are really struggling, like we did.)
