Have not opened condo in eons. Hope ya'll don't mind. And under the gun with time. Dental scheduled tomorrow. Still so much to do and deal with vet office on still during business hours. SO not time to type it all out at once, or even to worry about him yet. But trust me that will come later and I will need tons of vines.

But for now if it is alright, need to post question in pieces as I get my odds/ends list together to send them.

I posted also on FB, but just covering here hoping to get some responses. Can anyone comment on Consil (or other similar) for extraction sites? Is that something I should want/need? It apparently serves many functions...fends off infection, evens the ridge and decreases pocket depth, inhibits epithelial growth, prevents dry socket, etc... It was shown on most estimates I got prior and recently, but not all. Is this an old school/new school thing? This vet apparently does not use it routinely and may charge ridiculously for it (compared to what I have seen) Is it standard practice and cutting corners to not do it? Extractions are expected so need to address this. Not sure what you do with sockets if not, and want to do whats right. But cannot afford to pay and especially if he is outrageous in pricing,if not something really necessary. Are your kitties getting this included at their dentals?

Also how long are you fasting your cats? I know there are new schools of thoughts. We are diet controlled so insulin is not a factor. But he eats mini meals all day (part of his 'treatment) and will have never gone this long without food. Hardest will obviously be in the morning since he wants food the second he wakes up.

..more to follow. Thanks for advice and letting us visit!

Re: Hank Condo Rental- Questions preparing for Dental

I just looked over mocha's dental paperwork, she had 8 teeth extracted and I do not see that on her list of what was done for her .. But her last dental was three years ago so maybe it's a new thing? Wishing Hank lots of luck on his dental!

Re: Hank Condo Rental- Questions preparing for Dental

Good luck on Hank's dental tomorrow. Good dental vetty vines coming your way. When Neko had hers last year, all she needed was a bit of tartar cleaning so I can't help you on the extractions. Sienne put together a very detailed condo on Dental Procedures that might be of some help.

Neko had to have a anesthesia a couple of times last year (one for dental and 3 times for her SRT treatment) and at both places they said no food after midnight. I gave Neko quite a good meal just before midnight and it seemed to help. You should see if Hank will be one of the early in the day operations, that might help the food limitation.

Re: Hank Condo Rental- Questions preparing for Dental

A google search found it. See what you think.

It may help save teeth

Manufacturer's info
Consil Bone Graft Material

"What is Consil®?
Consil synthetic bone graft material is a bioactive ceramic containing salts of calcium, sodium, silica, and phosphorus. It undergoes a time dependent surface reaction when implanted at the dental or orthopedic repair site. The surface reaction results in the formation of a calcium phosphate layer that is substantially equivalent to the hydroxyapatite layer found in bone material. Osteoblasts infiltrate and proliferate on the surface of the material, and bone growth occurs uniformly throughout the defect.

Consil material accelerates the healing process and research has shown that Consil’s mechanisms of action include enhancing cell signaling and cell division necessary for facilitating bone regeneration and repair of bony defects.1,2 The Consil material is gradually replaced by new bone allowing complete repair of the bony defect.

Advantages of Consil Dental, Orthopedic and Putty products:
Restore bone, contributing to patient comfort and well being
Conform readily to the defect site
Composed of materials naturally present in the body
Begin to repair bony defects through new bone production within 4 weeks3
Develop a bending strength and stiffness very similar to normal bone in 3 months
Can be used in contaminated sites because of the physiological pH maintained which inhibits bacterial growth,4,5though site should be flushed well to remove debris
Minimize bleeding at the site and will not migrate due to hemostatic properties3,6
Multiple year shelf life

Consil is ideal for use in dental and orthopedic procedures:

Dental Applications:
Infrabony pockets caused by periodontal disease
Tooth extraction sites
Endodontic-periodontic lesions
Traumatic defects or intraosseous flaws related to pulpal floor or lateral root perforations"

Re: Hank Condo Rental- Questions preparing for Dental

Thanks BJ. Yeah, I'd researched it. Just was curious from a reality standpoint if your vet's are using it as a standard?
If he is going to charge 2-3 times what the others would, it may not be am option.

I also must be terrible at this. When things like this come up and you see everyone using it, then ask the one guy who doesn't...you come off as micro-managing.
I cannot tell you how many times I've wished for several of you on board to help sort details and pose the questions, to get information we need. I heed the suggestions I see on the board. But feel like I just come off as high maintenance and neurotic to them.

Is it current practice vs old school?...not sure.
For this particular item, I may have to say, yes..we want you to use this even if you don't normally..but not sure if it is necessary vs overkill.

I am not quite yet a stopping point, but soon will need to start worrying. I have to practically be there in 5 minutes. Why so early I am not good at 7:AM.
and traffic on top. Will be lucky if I don't show up in a robe. His teeth are really in bad shape, this is long overdue, and hoping there won't need to be many extractions. On top of which I just discovered the receptionist we like is not there in the morning. Just the one who never smiles or says much to me except, it must be paid today. The other one at least loves orange male cats. If not their neurotic Jewish mother.

Re: Hank Condo Rental-Questions for Dental- TOMORROW!!

I replied on FB. I'm not familiar with Consil. Gabby has resorptive lesions (FORL) and has lost several teeth. My vet has always done simple extractions and Consil has never been mentioned. My vets are pretty up to date. From what I can tell, this seems to be a product used primarily for bone grafts. This also strikes me as a product that is used more by a veterinary dental specialist.

Re: Hank Condo Rental-Questions for Dental- TOMORROW!!

Hi Betty,
Sorry not to be of any help on this question, but wanted to wish Hank good luck tomorrow. Sending good dental vines his way.

Ella & Rusty

p.s. Rusty has had most of his teeth extracted (only 1 extraction since living with us) and has only 5 teeth left. I don't think Consil was used during any of the extractions. I have never heard of it.

Re: Hank Condo Rental-Questions for Dental- TOMORROW!!

Thanks ya'll. This is helpful. Sienne I actually use your vets site for research and reference, so if they don't typically use it and Gabby has FORL then that is helpful to know.
This is repetitious .....since I also posted on FB. But as i understand some of the reasons it is used are:evens out/equalizes ridge at post extraction site, fills the socket, prevents infection, inhibits epithelial growth, decreases pocket depth, prevents dry socket (which I have personally had), promotes bone growth. I thought the sockets had to be filled before suturing. Anyway, too late now, He already thinks I am crazy. I am the bad guy cause I asked about it assuming it was routine based on being on the others.

Its too late now anyway. They clearly already think I am crazy, ask too many questions and am high maintenance. It all sound so reasonable will ya'll suggest what to broach/discuss with you vet. Am I just terrible at it? Why are they so defensive? Don't they understand we crazy cat ladies just love our babies and information is helpful and provides comfort?

I cannot tell you how many times I wished I had Cheryl. or Hillary, Jill, etc... to be my spokesperson. I don't want to seem difficult. We haven't had a vet in 3 1/2 years and my boys are getting older. Need to find someone who cares about them we can trust and have relationship with.

Anyway, we are down to the count. I have to drop him at 7:30AM. They are getting to him right away which I appreciate so he won't be scared and waiting idle.

And the impression I get is they will be phoning me with a plan. I am guessing within that first 30-45 minutes. I am not sure what may come up but they will want decisions right then on the spot for anything that does.
And i am sure to tell you it will be more money.
Can I ask ya'll to watch for us? I wish I knew when exactly but guessing 8:30-9:15CST? I am by myself and terrible at making decisions even on a good day.
Don't even know if I will have even a moment or two to type....but if I do will be looking for a fast reply.
Can every last one of you be on standby for us and type right back. Just Kidding  ...kind of. Would love to know someone has heads up in case we need to reach out about anything. Would FB be faster?

Oh lord. Here we go. It is SO close... I still have to give his meds and myself some dinner.

Why can't the nicer front person be there tomorrow? The other one is snarly.

thanks everyone for all your advice, support and vines. WE need them!! :YMHUG:

PS: sienne. I tried renewLIfe today per your suggestion. - it was the Ultimate flora not critical care- poured some out of capsule onto food this morning- who knows if a 1/3 or not, but that is what I shot for. Well the day got away and technically it is too clase to when we are supposed to give AB to give him more of the probiotic. We have been shooting for 4 hour spacing. When I fed him it wouldn't quite be 2 hours til I need to give his AB. But I decided to go ahead thinking the Ab would kill the probiotic not the other around if it were an issue. But the weirdest thing...the powder had humidifed or something. It was all clumpy and mostly would not come out. So not sure we will be able to ever control splitting it up into 2 or 3 doses. Have you ever seen that?

Re: Hank Condo Rental-Questions for Dental- TOMORROW!!

I remember my dad having periodontal disease and going through procedures to graft donor bone in to stabilize teeth - that was old school then. The description of Consil seems like it provides a way to stabilize a loose tooth, ie pockets, so it doesn't have to be yanked due to bone loss.

I have a feeling this is somewhat newer tech.

You might ask the vet the pros and cons of using it.

And ask yourself if it is important for him to retain his teeth and his bite alignment.
If I recall correctly, in humans, when teeth are pulled, a spacer, bridge, denture, or post for a tooth is put in to maintain the bite alignment. This may be true in cats and dogs, too.

Re: Hank Condo Rental-Questions for Dental- TOMORROW!!

J.D. saw a well known Dental Specialist and had 8 extractions in January in which one was major. I just went through all his paperwork and I do not see Consul listed there.
Just think if we all on the board went to the same vet  I think we would all be considered high maintenance, and knowledgable ;-)

Sending perfect dental vines to Hank today.

Re: Hank Condo Rental-Questions for Dental- TOMORROW!!

Thanks everyone. He was dropped off an hour+ ago. Vet came out and talked to me and even gave me a hug! I know I just come off as a neurotic cat lady to them. I told him about the board and what Dyana said...what if we all went to the same vet?!!!
But I feel a little better. Ironically not terribly worried at the moment. But I also have had only maybe 20 minutes of sleep..so may have something to do with it.
It was still darkish when we drove. Hank was STARVING...he was screaming for breakfast and didn't understand why I was not obliging. Because of his g-d awful GI issues due to the AB, he barely ate anything last night either. He could have had food up until midnite, but ate only 1 or 2 bites around 10:30 then straight to the box - more liqui-poo and then to the bed. Poor thing has been miserable. SO it was torture when he wanted food so badly this morning and I couldn't give him anything.
He yowled all the way in the car.
I expect word from them any minute. They are supposed to call with a 'plan' after he is under, x-rayed and they see what needs to be done. I am prepared for extractions..just hope it is nothing more significant or any big decisions.

Thanks for all the dental vines and wishes. I miss this place. I am always around more than you know...just don't post so much. I may have to start renting a condo a little more often. I forgot how much I love the visits.

next up, what did they find- what needs to happen? ....hope he gets through well and without much pain or stress- And I hope they are loving on him. He is my pumpkin boy love muffin center of the Universe.

Stay tuned...

Re: Hank Condo Rental-Questions for Dental- TOMORROW!!

Prayers + vines for minimal extractions and a good report.

Mine has resorptive lesions too, had all 4 fangs extracted at once, It was definitely an adjustment afterwards. (no Consul used)

Re: Hank Condo Rental-Questions for Dental- TOMORROW!!

Good Morning Betty

I'm praying for a good report from Hank's dentist this morning. Although my Checkers was 17 and had dentals almost every year, and had many extractions, I never heard of Consil. I see from research, that it's been around for years.

I'm holding your hand through cyberspace, as my civvie Tux is at 'the dentist' now, also.

Good dental vines to both our kitties.

Barb

Re: Hank Condo Rental- Dental- TODAY!!!! UPDATE!

Ok. Just got the call. My poor Baby. I hope I have this all straight. There are 6 teeth needing extraction!!
These are not the carnassials which he thought likely, he said those were not bad once he could see after getting the tartar off.
However several other teeth had holes going through them (OMG) or in various stages of resorption. 2 teeth are in early stage resorption, but he felt it made sense to do them now as they will need to come out within a year regardless so would save him from having to go through this and anesthesia again.
4 of these extractions are pre-molars (i think). The scariest thing is that the upper AND lower canine on one side (left?) will have to come out. Those showed issue under the jawline on xrays. I was NOT expecting this. Hank is going to be snaggle toothed and lopsided. Vet's comment was that it is not like he has to hunt so will not be an issue. He wants to add consil to the 2 canine teeth (he explained the reasons although I am not recalling it all very well) I think the upper canine has a deep root socket that gets near the nasal cavity so this must offer some stability? (not sure that is the right word) 2 or more other teeth had already resorbed, so he said there is nothing to remove but will smooth those areas out.

I deferred to him and blessed whatever he felt needed to be done. Took some notes best I could but we weren't on phone long as he needed to get back to Hank who is still under anesthesia. Not sure when they began, but think it has already been an hour or more. So that is a lot of time. Said they would call with update after they are done.

OMG, I feel awful for him. So much worse than I anticipated. I feel so terrible that he must have been suffering more than I realized.
He has already been on bupe for awhile before we could get on his schedule and while things were getting worked out. But clearly he will need to continue after this. I hope he is not becoming immune..or a junkie!

A lot to absorb. Any wisdom on keeping the pain at bay and helping with his recovery?

Barb- OMG.... We should have gotten 2 for 1 discounts! Vines to you and TUX too! Hope he gets a better report than ours. Thanks so much for the hand holding. I need it!!

Rhiannon: Can you tell me about having fangs removed? I did not see this until after we had our call. He wants to use Consil there.
Can you elaborate on the subsequent adjustments? Hank's will be gone on one side only...which just seems even weirder somehow. Like we'll need a prosthetic or something?! What has your kitty had a hard time with (post-fang)?

Please keep vines coming. He is still under anesthesia for awhile and undergoing a much bigger procedure than imagined. I hope my baby is OK and not too much pain. nailbite_smile

Re: Hank Condo Rental- Dental- TODAY!!!! UPDATE!

If Hank has resorptive lesions, he will feel much better after recovery. It's very painful for them although they mask it pretty well. One of the signs for tooth pain is their
jaw will "chatter" ( move quickly like shivering) when you scratch them along the teeth area.... side of jaw line. It's a pain response.

The adjustment for Shadow was definitely psychological. I would compare it to how a woman feels after a mastectomy. She knew her bite was impotent right away.
I could tell Shadow felt like a lesser cat losing all 4 at once. She was more demure, and she's has always been alpha over the dogs in our house. We helped her maintain
her alpha status and made the dogs feel like she was still the boss. She still will back off from them some of the time.

She also had a hard time eating without her fangs. She couldn't pick up her food as well. I had to chop her wet food into more pellet size balls and space it on the plate for
her first couple of months. ( She had always eaten friskies shreds before dx)
She's adapted now. In fact, with me adding water to her food, I find she's liking her pate's a little soupy. Anything in big chunks, I just either put in the mini chopper or
cut it up myself into little morsels.
There was just an adjustment period of accepting one's limitations.
Hank might not notice as much since he is only losing 2.

I think the idea is the Consil will plug the tooth root hole in the bone so it all heals as an intact jawbone, rather than having a weak area that would allow the other teeth to move around or a pocket where an abcess could form during healing.

Sending prayers to sweet Hank! My business partner's kitty had to have 3 of his canines extracted at once, and he did bounce back from it pretty well - she never commented that he had an problems with the adjustment, so hopefully the same will be true for Hank! Healing vines coming your way!!

Sorry just looking at this now. A little late, but wanted to send good thoughts and healing vines for Hank.

I never heard the term consil before and the dental specialist that I used (and sent Dyana too) never mentioned it. They are up on all the latest and greatest.

Maui has had several resorptive teeth removed and earlier this year an upper canine.

Buster had one canine removed and one partially saved with a root canal. They were both lower canines and dentist felt that if she could save the one tooth it would be best to give the itty bitty front teeth something to connect to and saving them later on.

I think your vet is smart to remove all FORL teeth even if not bad, cause you don't want to go through this again next year. Not only the cost, but the angst about it.

Sounds like your vet is being very thorough and this is a good thing.

Be sure to ask him to send you home with bupe for pain as it may be needed tonight/tomorrow. He probably used nerve blockers and may have given other pain meds too, but the after you will want it for.

Also, he may be loopy from the anesthesia, try to keep him contained, so he doesn't hurt himself and feed him only small amount of food until tomorrow, add lots of water to the food too. Soft food only. You don't want him vomiting.

I'm sure when Hank is discharged you will be presented with the instructions. Will the vet or someone be around tonight, just in case you need to call?

I hope all went well for Hank. Tess has lost bot her bottom canines, one broken off and the other last year and it doesn't seem to bother her. Our new civvies arrived on our door step w/ serious stomatitis and may need teeth removed, but I've been using 1-TDC that Hilary suggested. It has helped a lot, although she may still need some extractions. You can ask your vet about it, but it isn't Rx and you can order it from ADW, that is the best price i have found.

Hi lady! Just reading everything and wanted to send some healing vines to Hank! Poor guy! Hope he has a speedy recovery and feels better soon! Hugs!!! Chat later!

Hi Betty,
I'm just catching up on Hank's dental, too, and adding more healing vines for Hank and comfort and calming vines for you. Maggie seemed to have her share of the resorbtive toothies and extractions and came out of it fine. Sounds like you have a good Vet. I bet you can't wait to get Hank home. Wishing him a speedy recovery.

Thanks so much everyone. Helps so much to have ya'll. Leaving soon to get him. Invoice came showing 5 extractions rather than 6? Will ask when I get there. Haven't talked to vet yet, but tech updated, said he was sort of up but still a bit out of it maybe an 1 1/2 ago. She mentioned they were only able to get consil in his mandibular canine not the top as there was a fistula? Don't fully understand this but apparantly as a result of the FORl this fistula has positioned itself between tooth and nasal cavity, so no room for consil. She says the fistula will heal, but now I guess I need to find out what happens with that void when it does.
He had advised that the consil was needed for stabilization in both of these.

Still hurrying to get ready. I am preparing my follow up/aftercare questions. If anyone can think anything to add I'd love to know. Won't have much time to check back though. Need to do a few things and get ready to leave shortly. This turned into a much bigger deal than anticipated. He was apparantly under anesthesia 2 1/2 hours! Hope he is ok. And hope I know what to do for him to help him recover. Any advice on how to keep him more comfortable is greatly appreciated. I still have 7 bupe doses left, so enough for tonight plus BID for 3 more days.
He also still has 3 days left on the evil Clindamycin AB. It was already killing him and me for him. I can't imagine it won't be even worse with a sore mouth and everything else he has going on. Posted on this topic a couple days ago on FB.
Vet's reply- that is why they like Covenia!

Hope he does ok in the car. He hates it and now we will be in terrible rush hour traffic on top.
But will be glad to get him back home.

.... to be continued

Since you're competent doing subQ insulin, ask about a subQ AB you could give. They could prefill them and cap them for you to take home.

Oral ABs often upset the GI tract. Have you any FortiFlora or other probiotic you might give a couple hours after the AB, to restofe the good bacteria wiped out by the AB?

(((Betty and Hank))) I hope Hank feels better now that those problem teeth are out. And I hope his post-surgery mouth recovers really fast and he gets his appetite back.

We are back. Exhausted and little shell shocked. When I got there the vet was still with someone, so i asked the receptionist if I could see Hank. She brought him into the room and I almost didn't recognize him. He looked strange and sort of growled/made a guttural noise when she handed him to me and he was drooling a little blood and had rapid heart beat. I got teary and wondered if it was really ok for him to come home. They took him back to the cage and I talked a little to the vet. By then I was on fumes (i slept maybe 4 hours) and vet had a crazy day and 2 appointments waiting. Told me to give bupe which is due in just a few minutes, but I could skip clindamycin for tonight. Hallelujah for that. Then only have to give him 2 more doses.
We started looking at radiographs. but did not finish. Poor thing had open cavities where weird gum formations were forming, holes in teeth ..was a mess. I will share more once i get a better look at them.
I will come back and write more, just fading a little here.
But he has been very strange and sort of freaked out since home. On the one hand he ran out of the carrier, jumped on the bed, wanted food almost immediately which was good. I put a teensie amount of very watery food down and he wanted it..but his mouth is freaking him out. It is not just that he is pawing at it, he is shaking his head, making noises...totally bizarre behavior. I think his mouth doesn't feel like it's his to him. It does not seem to be just about the pain. Worries me.
His tongue was hanging out a little where the canines were removed. We really barely walked in the door so haven't had a chance to look at him well. I was glad he wanted to eat, but it is all around a little strange here at the moment. Not sure if this is pain, or anesthesia or what.
From what many of you said I was prepared he would want a quiet spot to sleep it off. I have separated my civvie. But Hank is up around on/off the bed, changing locations- a bit restless, tried to groom but did that weird pawing and sort of throwing his head to the side, the head shaky thing, and noise.
How long before the anesthesia wears off?

I will come back - need to go check on him and get him settled. Wish I were more awake, I need a nap!
Wish me luck...I have to get in that mouth to give him his bupe in 5 minutes.

Thanks so much for checking on us. Any advice for me with this weirdness and/or how to help him recover? make him more comfortable?
I wonder if any part of it is what Rhiannon said about adjusting after losing canines? I mentioned this to the tech who said, absolutely, these are like their fingers..but did not seem to think it would be so bad with 2 vs 4.

carolyn- You are part of all this- I haven't forgotten. Thank you always and for checking up on us...

Has Hank had the bupe yet? My civvie, Petey, had a dental last January - not as extreme as Hank's, but two extractions. When he came home, his behavior was much like what you are describing Hank's to be like. He was restless, falling over, wobbly, slippery, frantic for food & water, pawing at his face, in general seemed very panicky. Once we gave him the bupe, within about 15 minutes he settled down, and after that, he was OK. We gave him bupe for about 3 days.

When Trix had her dental a few years ago, she had 7 extractions (no canines, but lots of broken teeth and roots). I had the vet give her the bupe before we left, and by the time we got home, she was super lovey dovey. Big difference between her and Petey, and I think the pain and anxiety for both were calmed by the bupe.

Sending more prayers your way that Hank adjusts and heals up quickly.

Hi Betty,
It sure sounds like Hank really needed that dental! Don't worry too much about his odd behavior upon returning home. He has had a major shock to his body and he needs time to recover. Give him the Bupe and make a nice bed for him in a peaceful place. He'll feel better and better soon. Rusty still has his 2 bottom canine teeth and his tongue often sticks out between them. As I mentioned yesterday, he only has 5 teeth left in his mouth, but he eats just fine.

Continuing to send heaps of healing vines to Hank. Heal well, buddy!

Oh Amy thanks. I was on my way to do it anyway but that provided some comfort.
This vet tech (very knowledgeable- used to assist dental vet specialist) suggested that his post-op pain would be nowhere near the pain he has been living with in his mouth with all these bad teeth. (heartbreaking) But that doesn't seem to be the case.
I hope you are right Amy. I had a hard time dosing him- he wanted me nowhere near his mouth, flinched and i felt some run out, down the syringe, on my finger.
I hope I got enough in him. We are both having a moment. Wish i were more rested so I could care better for him
The food was gone. But I bet it was only an ounce or so I put down. I know not to feed to much too fast. How long should I wait in between?
He has had next to nothing in 24 hours.

Hoping for him the bupe helps with the freakies.

A couple of things....

Check with the vet and see if you can give the bupe via syringe. You can inject bupe as a subcutaneous injection -- just like insulin. I don't know if your insulin syringes are calibrated correctly for bupe, though.

I've sometimes given Gabby baby food after extractions. The last time she had a dental with extractions, she wanted real food vs. baby food. I would give Hank what he'll eat. The issue with scarf-and-barf is more relevant a few hours after the procedure. Since the dental was lots of hours ago, I think you're fine to feed Hank normally.

I would get bupe into him every 8 to 12 hours depending on his level of discomfort. You want to stay ahead of pain in order to manage it.

I think the sensation of the daily pre-op pain and the sensation of the post-op pain is an apples and oranges comparison...totally different. Hopefully the bupe will help calm Hank. After we got that first dose into Petey, he really was fine. We kept giving him the pain meds for the prescribed timeframe, but he was much, much calmer - over the anesthesia and initial shock of the procedure.

With the feeding...I think we fed Petey small quantities in about half an hour increments, if I remember correctly. He was starving, despite the pain!

Hank is definitely on the road to healing...he'll be back to his old self before you know it.

Shadow did the same... came home... very restless...lots of pacing... but she also reacted negatively to one of the pain medications.

I feel fortunate that they gave her a transdermal patch instead of me having to put it in her mouth.
He'll feel much better tomorrow.
If you can settle in, set the tone for relaxing so that he might settle in a spot to lay down after he's eaten and gotten his bupe.

I agree with the thought that their fangs are like their fingers. So everything feels different to him on top of medications that leave him feeling loopy and lost.
Healing vines so he can adapt.

I think he feels like its someone elses mouth- not himself...freaks him out.
swirls his tongue to eat or groom, and makes sort of clipped guttural growl sound. Wonder also if he feels not just missing teeth, but maybe the sutures
And tongue hangs out ..the new Hank!
Checked and he was resting on bed but not sleeping. His eyes still look all spaced out...they put that goop in them.
I gave him a little more food with some sprinkled Fortiflora...brought to him on the bed. He stood up and ate all of it.
I can't tell if bupe took the edge off. We have only 6 pre-filled syringes left after tonight. He's been getting 2 doses every 12 hours for 10 days or so now.
Was instructed to continue same interval. But sort of wish I had a couple extra so I could give it a little closer if needed.
Especially seeing what Amy said. Maybe it should have been a little earlier. Figured he still would have some residual effect from the nerve blocker..so maybe fine. Anyway, we have enough for 3 days if follow the 2x day every 12 hours, otherwise if spaced closer than 12 hours will run out.
I discovered (after the fact) I could have gotten a 6.5ml vial at the compounding pharmacy and given more/less as needed and also was much cheaper and would still have some extra left. Vets office just said come pick up these pre filled syringes and it costs x. I'll know next time.
He may not need it by day 3, but if wrong and this all gone it would be on the weekend and vets office closed when we ran out. will decide.
I just want to stay on top of his pain if I can gauge it. Or do I just stick with the 12 hours apart regardless as per the vet?
Anyway, I am on fumes and typing in circles. Oh and he pooped..did i mention? soft stool...but not as bad as yesterday, and not as much since he has hardly eaten.
Dread resuming the clinda.

Thanks for all the good wishes.
I will give it some more time and hope he is himself more soon and this yuk out of the way.

I would call the vet and ask for more.... just in case.
Mine is always willing to give me more of something, she knows I won't use it IF I don't have to but I'd rather have it on hand for the weekend when they are closed.

His sutures probably hurt a little , besides feeling weird.
I'm glad he's eating so readily. And poo.... all good signs....

When you get a chance, look at the report/bill and tell us what Anesthesia and other meds were used during/after the procedure. Should be itemized on the bill. This could affect why he is restless.

As some meds can cause this. If it continues after 24 hours being home, CALL the vet to discuss. Hopefully it will all get out of him by tomorrow. Also, giving him lots of water should help flush any residual out.

Yes, losing that many teeth, especially canines can affect how they eat and behave with their mouths. Did the vet use dissolving stitches? Did he schedule a follow up in one/two weeks so he can check to see how he is progressing and healing?

And yes, feed him more. My dentist always said to not give too much food at first (never told an amount to give), just not to let them overdo, vomit, pull out stitches, etc. and

only soft food - baby food is a great idea for now. No toys, chew toys or anything of the like.

In the follow up appt - vet should talk about tooth brushing or alternatives, etc. If not, we can talk about it and how to work on starting that. While it won't stop FORLS, it will help with tartar and calcification buildup.
