I've noticed that Tiki has been having some issues with hairballs since this whole FD thing began. Maybe one a month if even that many...but he's never had them before, ever. What can you do for hairballs with a diabetic cat? I would imagine things like Laxatone are full of sugar.

Just curious.

I don't think the stuff I use - Cat-Lax - is available in the US but although it contains malt syrup it doesn't get digested and therefore doesn't affect Vyktor's numbers. Plain olive oil is okay to use if Tiki will tolerate it on food - Vyktor won't.

I make little butter/freeze dried chicken sandwiches for Weezer. She didn't go for the butter on its own. Seems to work pretty well.

Butter, vegetable oil, salmon oil, or even Vasoline work quite well. (The Vasoline sounds weird but it's the base of most of the hairball remedies.)

I recently looked into this issue w/Curry.

I had used Lax'aire with her but it has sugar in it although its not listed as an ingredient. I called Pfizer and they told me about the sugar in it. It caused a glucose spike in her.

Did some research and found Laxatone Natural...not the regular Laxatone products. It has sorbital in it as one of the last ingredients which is a low glycemic sugar that doesn't raise Curry's numbers at all. I also will give it to her at meal time to slow the absorption of any of the sorbital. I give to her 2 to 3 times per week right now. Curry likes it....Well, Curry like ANYTHING.

Then a great brush to use although a little pricey is the Furminator. Curry hates being brushed but my civvie loves it. It take off a ton of hair.

Hope this helps,
Tena

Butter??? As in BUTTER BUTTER the toast butter? Will be laughing all night at the thought of chicken butter sandwiches...

What about fish oil? I give one to my dog every day I could start giving one to Tiki too. Every day or just every now and then? Like I said, his issue with hairballs is hardly ever so I don't want to give him something he barely needs and end up with a whole OTHER problem (ie the runs).

The last time I was in the U.S. I picked up Hairball Eliminator.
It's by PRO-PET and it's sugar-free.
It even says sugar-free and ideal for diabetic cats on the front of the tube.
It's seafood flavor and DC loves it.
It was about $6 for a 2.5oz tube.
I'm pretty sure I bought it at Wal-Mart in either Phoenix or Las Vegas.
The website for them is www.propetcybervet.com
You can't order from the website but they do have a store locator.
They do have both regular and sugar-free so you need to watch the packaging.
