Hairballs

Marshmallow occasionally gets hairballs. Before she had diabetes, I gave her a product called Lax Aire. I'm just wondering if it's okay to give commercial hairball stuff to sugarcats? The ingredients are cod liver oil, soybean oil and liquid petrolatum. If this isn't good for a diabetic cat, what else can I use for hairballs?

I asked her old bad vet if I could still give it to her and he said yes. I don't trust him though since he proved he was bad (put her on too high of a dose of insulin, didn't recognize the Somogyi effect when he did a curve, then increased her insulin by a whole unit which made her go hypo). I have a good new vet now but he is slow at returning phone calls so I don't know when I'll hear back from him about this. Thanks!

You might try a little coconut oil...it's available at any grocery store in the same aisle as the other oils. Look for the cold pressed kind (looks like Crisco...semi-solid)

My vet recommended petroleum jelly (vaseline). I've been giving it to my cats for years for hairballs with success.

Thanks, I'll try both vaseline and coconut oil! Vaseline is pure petroleum jelly so I'm guessing it's not too different from what I've been using but I just want to make sure that whatever I give her is sugar-free!

I'd try each separately, not together. Be sure the Vaseline is free of fragrance and additives.

I don't see why soybean and cod liver oil would be an issue for sugar cats.

Although soybeans themselves are high in carbs, neither soybean oil nor cod liver oil have any carbs at all so I can't see it causing a BG spike as long as the ingredients you've listed are the only ones the product contains.

Don't worry @Cat Ma, I won't give her both at once. :)

@manxcat419, thanks, those are the only ingredients in the hairball remedy. I'm trying my best to keep her OTJ so I didn't want to give her anything loaded with carbs!

It looks to me as though your vet was right this time then and it is safe - it doesn't have any carbs at all based on that ingredients list. :)
