About a month ago I acquired a new cat (stray civvie) with a beautiful black coat. She looks like a Bombay. However, the past 2 weeks the fur at the base of the tail has changed to a gray color and is coarse. It seems to be spreading up the middle of the back with a skin problem, as well. I don't see any fleas. Also, would you believe some idiot had her declawed front and back? any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

I would have your vet check for for parasites in the skin and intestines. One of my cats had hook rooms and bit up not only his anal area but his hind quarters and tail too. Even if they don't have claws the constant scratching or licking can still irriitate the skin.

Jen, I thought of stud tail first but the OP said it was a "she" cat.

It could be flea allergy dermatitis. It can only take a flea or two for a cat to react to fleas in that manner. Is the cat licking the area?

Does it look like this:

This is my Thunder. We think was flea allergy dermatitis. Oral pred did not seem to do much. However, the fur is finally growing back after months of a bear spot. I applied Benadryl gel in the morning and OTC human hydrocortisone cream in the evening. He was licking it a lot.

Thanks for the picture, Larry. i just looked at her again. No, it doesn't look like that. Actually I don't think her skin is affected. Her fur which is pitch black has turned to a grayish color in that spot and the texture seems coarser and thinner. I would take a picture and post it, but I don't know how. I also noticed areas about the size of a pea around her ears which have lost hair.
