Ate a treat at test time. Brought breakfast right to her. No interest. What should I do??

Re: Gypsy AMPS 338...not eating

Actually...she just ate some. Not a huge amount but she doesn't often eat lots at once. Maybe I overreacted.

Re: Gypsy AMPS 338...not eating

Offer something that she really likes? Warm it up? Add some crushed treats on top?

If she was sick last night, for whatever reason, her tummy may still be a little shaky this morning. If she refuses to eat today at all, I would take her in.

Re: Gypsy AMPS 338...not eating

Barring other issues, the insulin may prompt some eating later. Check my signature link Secondary Monitoring Tools for some additional assessments you can make to monitor her - ex dehydration checks.

I responded on Health, but...

Keep an eye on her appetite. If your vet is open on Saturday, and she still doesn't show a normal appy, call them before they close. I'm guessing they aren't open on Sunday, and you don't want this to continue until Monday. When a cat doesn't eat for more than 24 hours, things can go really bad, really fast. Hepatic Lipidosis can happen quickly. Also called "fatty liver". It's not something you can fix at home.

Re: Gypsy AMPS 338...not eating

Thanks guys....she's been drinking water again. Updated SS. My vet actually is open on Sunday. We go to Banfield in Petsmart. They've been great. I originally went there because it was an emergency but they encouraged home testing, took time to teach me how to give shots , and have just been great. I hope she is better tonight. Bringing her in tomorrow if she doesn't eat much or acts weird still.

Re: Gypsy AMPS 338...not eating

See if you can get her to play a bit. That may trigger the hunt, catch, kill, eat behavior cycle.

Re: Gypsy AMPS 338...not eating

Not interested in playing. That's not abnormal though. She's never been one to play. Even when I first got her she didn't really play. She's awake and alert now. Not acting sluggish. I'll keep an eye on her. I really hope it's just leftover from last night.

Re: Gypsy AMPS 338...not eating

Got a ketone test. No traces. Maybe she really is just sick? Still thinking vet tomorrow f she doesn't perk up.

Re: Gypsy AMPS 338...not eating

Rachel,

Although she may not have ketones, she could have a mild case of pancreatitis. Diabetic cats are prone to it and there are varying degrees of it.
So if she is still not eating tomorrow maybe a vet visit might be a good idea. Best of luck and hope she eats tonight.

You might see if 1/4 of a 10 mg Pepcid AC would help.

If she' s difficult to pill, pop it in an oral syringe, put the plunger back in, draw up a a little water, shake to dissolve, then squirt into the back side of the mouth.

Re: Gypsy AMPS 338...not eating

Well she's 410 glucose and not eating. Thinking vet tomorrow...this is clearly bad. Dose advice? Should I give a unit due to high number? BJ, what's your thought on vet? Think I need to go? Sorry guys I am worried and can't seem to decide anything on my own.

The glucose is high enough to give some insulin. Some vets have you give a half dose when fasting a cat pre-anesthesia.

Try the 1/4 Pepcid AC about 20 minutes before giving any food. If upset stomach/acid is part of the problem, it could help out.

When 2 or more days go by without eating, the risk of hepatic lipidosis goes way up. Fat gets broken down for calories, moves to the liver, swells it up and blocks the bile ducts. Bile backs up causing jaundice and the entire digestive system is disrupted. It can be fatal.

I am big on going with your gut, Rachel. If I were you, and you think she is unwell, I'd take her in. They can figure out what is going on and keep her safe as far as the insulin dose.

I gave her the Pepcid. The syringe trick did it BJ. Thanks.

Sue, thank you too. I'm bringing her tomorrow if she doesn't eat and I doubt she will. She's perfectly normal except the not eating. I'm so worried. Please say a prayer or send a good thought that this isn't serious.
