Hi Everyone,

Gus hasn't been eating (he licks his food and walks away from it), has been vomiting (which he almost never does, a hairball once a month is about average) and has diarrhea. These symptoms started on Thursday evening. He seems miserable and doesn't want to play. I've tried changing food from Purina DM to Fancy Feast, but the change hasn't helped. His BG levels are still high enough to shoot, so he has been getting insulin.

I'm confused because the previous week he was doing the best I've seen him since before his diagnosis (eating well, playing, grooming, greeting me at the door).

I'm thinking he needs a vet visit, but am uncertain what to say to the vet other than the nausea, vomiting and diarrhea - if he was a human, I'd say that he has food poisoning. Everything he eats is canned, so from where would he have gotten food poisoning?

Have you tested for ketones? If he hasn't eaten for 24 hour, go to the vet. He can develop hepatic lipidosis which can be fatal. I'd call the vet and ask if they can see him today. Just list all the symptoms.

Also have him checked for pancreatitis as well, like Rachel said if he`s not eating he can develop hepatic lipidos quickly. Yes please get him to the vet.
Most likely its probably not food poisoning.

There can be variations in the canned food from batch to batch. Keep track of batch numbers, so that when there is a change, you have tha info. I experienced problems with Wellness batches in 2011 and it traced back to one of their plants needing some quality control fixes.

I took Gus to the ER vet's last night after work. Given Gus' symptoms, the vet thought that he had hepatic lipidosis.

I decided to have Gus put to sleep, as he was in pain, and had a bad long term prognosis.

My thanks to everyone on the the FD boards that helped me keep my pet for as long as possible.

Liz,

I am so sorry to hear this. I am sorry that Gus was so sick and very sorry for your loss.

Terri

So sorry. Fly free sweet Gus. Gypsy will meet you at Rainbow Bridge. Fun times are waiting for you!

Lighting a ring of candles, in loving memory of your beloved Gus.

Thanks everyone. It was hard last night. He hadn't felt well enough to hop up on the bed for several days, but last night, knowing he wasn't ever going to hop up and curl around my feet again was rough.

I have several bags of unopened syringes and about 40 Reli On test strips. Would anyone use these?

Liz
