Hi Folks,

Vinnie here.. I have 2 rescue cats, Gus (the old man) and Crush.. My little buddy Gus has had a relapse.. Away we go....

Could you tell us a little more about Gus? I am assuming that he was in remission?

I just got the news today that my Harley (14.5 years old) has relapsed after 2.5 years off Insulin. He is heading to the vet tomorrow for his glucose curve and to get set up again for Insulin shots. We were lucky last time we only did insulin for 2 weeks before he went into remission.

That's a shame and hopefully his stint will be fast again. Did you catch it with home testing or did the vet's blood work show it? The reason I ask is because if it were at the vet's, he could be 100 points higher there than if you tested him at home where he would not be stressed.

His bloodwork 4 months ago was fine aside from kidneys issues (stage 2 kidney disease). The results today said his kidneys were fine, back to normal (?) the vet has no idea how that happened. Unfortunately the diabetes is back she said his glucose level (I think) was in the 30's but shouldn't be higher than 9.7.
We only did insulin for 2 weeks last time so we have never done home monitoring.

Welcome to the message board, the best place you never wanted to be.

There are 4 things you'll need to manage your kitty's diabetes:
- You - without your commitment, the following won't work.
- Home blood glucose monitoring with an inexpensive human glucometer such as the WalMart Relion Confirm or Target Up and Up (the pet ones will break your budget!). This saves you the cost of going to the vet for curves and done regularly, removes the need for a fructosamine test. All of our insulin guidelines use human glucometer numbers for reference.
- Low carb over the counter canned or raw diet, such as many Friskies pates. See Cat Info for more info. If already on insulin, you must be home testing before changing the diet. Food changes should be gradual to avoid GI upsets - 20-25% different food each day until switched. There are 2 low carb, dry, over the counter foods in the US - Evo Cat and Kitten dry found at pet specialty stores and Young Again 0 Carb found online.
- A long-lasting insulin such as ProZinc, Lantus, BCP PZI, or Levemir. No insulin lasts 24 hours in the cat, so giving it every 12 hours is optimal for control.

Good morning. Don't mean to hijack the thread from Harley and Gus, but I'd been meaning to ask about the Evo that you just mentioned. FF beef feast and FF chicken feast are our primary, but we want to have a dry secondary to use for treats and/or vacations. We tried the Young Again samples, and couldn't get all 6 (1 sugar, 5 civies) to even sniff it, and the kibble pieces were really tiny in the YAZC Mature, which they never liked back when they ate all dry. But 5 of them love the Evo and we are working on the 1 holdout now. This is what we got, but can you confirm that it is the correct one? http://www.chewy.com/cat/evo-turkey...VO&utm_term=&gclid=COjqiKvM08gCFQ6QHwod4uICQg And do you know the carb count? I didn't see dry in the Dr. Lisa chart or the Janet & Binky lists at all, unless I just missed it. Thanks much.

Thanks for the welcome BJM. We are not looking forward to the injections again but thankfully my hubby is willing and able! We want Harley to feel 100%. The vet is giving us a glucometer starter kit and will show us how to use it this afternoon. Not sure what to do about the food since he is on a kidney special diet and the diabetic friendly food you mentioned maybe too high protein for his kidneys?!

Restricting the protein content depends on what level of renal impairment he has. Take a look at Feline CRF for more information.
What glucometer will you be using?
