Guidance Please - Is This Spot's First BOUNCE Or Just Wonkiness?

Good Morning -

Due to the craziness of my situation with my father about to pass away (still hanging on - which is amazing hospice and all of us) I received great guidance in THIS POST about the dilemma if I should increase Lantus now or not. Since that post and due to funeral timing issues with Memorial Day weekend the following week, we recently discovered we would not begin traveling earlier than this coming Monday on our 4 day drive from Seattle to Illinois (with Spot). This opened up a window of time where we could count on not having to drive in the next three days. We decided to grab that opportunity, given he wasn't budging an inch on the 1 unit dose, while we could. So we increased to 1.5u

Please see what happened on his spreadsheet. I hope I made the right decision to "stick with the new 1.5u dose" this morning - he is acting fine, good appetite...not acting symptomatic with this high reading.

I am assuming this is a bounce, given he had dropped quite a large distance 4 hours after last night's dose?

Please let me know if I am handling this right by staying put with the 1.5u.

I have read a lot about hypoglycemia (which his numbers are nowhere near), but am lacking in knowledge of how a cat feels/acts when they drop hard and fast and then spike up hard and fast. Is there anything I can do to help Spot through these bounce episodes?

One last thing: I did the .5 increase because his numbers never came down from the 300s and that was what tight regulation called for - but maybe the depot filled at the same time?? Perhaps I should have done a .25u increase instead? I am having no luck finding the syringes that have the .5 markings - I may need them in the future for a .25u increase, etc. Is there a brand at a store you can recommend? I can't order online right now with my leaving soon.

Thank you,
Robin

I'm so sorry about your father. My mom has been in and out of the hospital since Max became diabetic and it's so hard. :bighug: It's a very emotional time when our parents are end stage.

These are the syringes it was suggested I try as I'm running out of the ones I have been using that were discontinued.

I think you are experiencing a ounce from the big drop and would stick with the current dose until you see where it takes you. There is nothing to do but wait out tge bounces. As you get familiar with patterns you can guide tgen with food to try and prevent big drops. I feed many small meals until nadir for example. Others feed just a few times a day unless their cats drop too low. It's kind of trial and error to see what works. As you gather data it will help decide what works.

Keep asking questions. Someone will almost always have an answer.

Hey Robin and welcome. I am sorry about your Dad, it's hard to see our parents fail. The syringes I use are from Walmart. They are the Relion Syringes a box of 100 are under $ 30 bucks. I use the 2/10 ml ,30 gauge and 8mm for length, these have the .5 markings .

What is the carb count wet food you are giving Spot? A lot of us give Fancy Feast CLASSICS which are around 4% in carbs. Some cats are extremely carb sensitive.

Thanks so much for your comforting words and syringe recommendations, too.

As for Spot's food, he only receives Fancy Feast Classic Chicken (pate) - I will add that to my signature right now, which I should have done.
It sounds "cruel" but he doesn't get treats at all. He is in love with ONLY the chicken classic (no other flavors, such an oddball!) and is a grazer. So anytime is "treat time" for him. Have tried over the years to give him REAL chicken off my plate. NOPE. Have tried REAL CHEESE. NOPE. Crack open a new can of chicken FF....YESSSSS!!

He knows what he likes! LOL

Yes he is a bit "set in his ways" haha

Just die a 3 hour check and he is now 373 - I have to leave now (seeing my dad) but will keep posting results, even when I can't chat and say thank you....so let me say THANK YOU in advance.......you are helping me so much as I try to juggle what feels like a million balls in the air........

Robin
