Grunting while pooping

:(It appears we have a new old problem. Background: End of december mr biddles is grunting while pooping. This, after being on hills md and purina dm for diabetes diagnosed in november. I bring to vet, get xrays, yes he is constipated, they put him on hills j/d which then screwed up his diabetes. His poops were never normal but the grunting calmed down. Like i said on another thread, i also tried his older food with a variety of laxatives like psyylliu, pumpkin, etc. Usually his poop would end up partly formed with a lot of mush at the end. And of course his diabetes was unregulated and worsening on that food.

Fed up, went to new vet 7 days ago. Back on purina dm but with miralax. Miralax worked a little too well, so we stopped. Yesterday i started Ziwipeak.

Tonight i happen to catch him pooping and he was grunting a lot. The poop is NORMAL. Its like how his poops used to be. Big, formed, not hard or dry. Technically i dont think he is constipated. I think its either his arthritis, the position (his hind legs have been weakening since end of december), the pushing, plus he's got the inflamed liver and pancreatitis, and b12 deficiency.

I have added miralax to his overnight food tonight.

I'm so tired. I'm sorry for being so whiny. I dont even know what i'm asking for here. All i know is he's uncomfortable and fidgety again tonight. I'll be talking to the vet on tuesday and see what she says.

:(

It's Ok Jen! You are not being whiny and no apology is needed! You are a worried kitty Mom who is trying to get some answers to help Mr. Biddles feel better.:bighug:

I don't have any personal experience with feline IBD but I do have a friend whose cat has the condition and any diet changes always seem to set the IBD off with her cat. You said you just started the Ziwipeak yesterday. Did you introduce the new food gradually (a bit of the new with mostly old) or just swap it out for the old totally?

While it could be the arthritis, I think abdominal discomfort is a far more likely reason for this grunting and a vet consult is probably a good idea. If you did make the food change abruptly, I'd try going back to the former food and see if that stops the grunting.

Hi Shane,

Did Marshmallow ever have problems like the ones Mr Biddles is experiencing? Saoirse gets constipated but she has never grunted when trying to pass a stool so I've got nothing helpful to suggest. :(

No, she never grunted. But if his poop was normal, I would think it's one of his other issues, poor thing. It's overwhelming when our kitties aren't well and when we're juggling multiple issues. You're doing a great job, @Misterbeesmom. :bighug::bighug::bighug:
