There we are,,, high blood pressure, high thyroid function and then kidney disease, sugar is normal now which is nice.
We have to give med for b.p and hyperthyroid and special food.

I just wonder how we will get those pills down. He has lost quite a bit of weight now and his appetite is not what it used to be.... I figure he is 18 and the problems are coming even more now. Sophia is skin and bones and has slowed down a lot and we take it day by day we will have to think about putting her to sleep pretty soon. It is heartbreaking.... she is still funny.. last night she went into Greylie;s bed and when he came he started crying because she was not nice to him and he is blind and was very confused...
 
I remember when my 17 year old kitty got down to skin and bones with very little energy. I knew something was wrong besides just old age. She was then diagnosed with renal disease and the decision had to be made to put her to sleep. That was so hard and I never want to have to make that decision again. My heart goes out to you with what you are facing now with your kitties. Rocky, my present kitty with diabetes is doing so-so, but I am hoping he will gradually improve.
 
Many pills will dissolve in water if the pill is cut up first to get through that protective coating. Capsules can be pulled apart and contents dumped.

I used to crush pills that did not dissolve well and add the powder to a syringe, add a little water and put the plunger back into the syringe. I used a larger bore syringe to help with this. If you crush the pill on a piece of paper, you can fold the paper into a v shape and then tip and tap the powder from the paper into the syringe, with plunger removed first. Hold your finger over the tip of the syringe and then add a little water. Put the plunger back in the syringe barrel and tip the syringe up so the tip is pointed towards the ceiling.

If you have multiple medications to give, they can all be added to the syringe at the same time. You only need a little bit of water, maybe 1/2 cc.

Hold finger on the tip and shake to help dissolve any pills. Slowly push the plunger farthur down into the syringe, trying not to push any of the medication out the tip.

Squirt into the side of your cat's mouth.

I did this for a cat with bad stomatitis that despised being pilled. It was easier than trying to get a pill into her mouth and possibly making her mouth hurt more.
 
You do what you can to keep them comfortable until you know there is no more to be done.

Have you been to Tanya's Feline cRF page? Lots of good info on managing a cat with renal disease. Depending on what stage of cRF, you might find a kitten food with low phosphorus, that may help slow the weight loss. It has a bit more fat in it for calories. Cat Info discusses nutrition and renal disease, too.

The thyroid med can be compounded into a transdermal gel, although I always dissolved it in a bit of water, smushed it into some stinky A/D, and Emmy just scarfed it down.

Depending on the BP med, check with the vet to see if it could be dissolved in an oral syringe with some water, and a bit of stinky food added to cover the taste or done in a transdermal get, too. Alternatively, some vets can compound it with flavorings a cat would like (they tend to charge for it, though)
 
Thank you.. tomorrow we start our journey with Greylie.... we have so much trouble giving Sophia the fluid... she goes crazy... bites, scratches ect/// but it needs to be done....
 
Adding an ounce or two of water to the canned food to make it soupy may help. Use distilled water, so no additional minerals need to be processed by the kidneys.

Thank you Jeane,,,,, I think I am a pushover and Sophia knows it... we have to give her fluids and wow... recently she behaves like a feral cat, bites and scratches ect. and then stands up and there is no holding down. She is in stage 4 now. It is dh's cat and we see but it won't be long now. I have told our son to be ready to write the Sophia letter.. that means he will pour his heart out and then the letter will be put in her little grave. I am doing this with all my pets. This way I can tell them how much they meant to me. It is so hard to let go because they hve been part of our lives for a long long time..
