Yesterday morning he threw up but he ate his food again later... he has kidney failure and diet controlled diabetes so he has a mixture of food and I can't feed him just anything. I have given him a few morsels of dry and he ate it.... when I put his food in the plate he makes a funny nose like 'brr'' and walks away..then I put some FF with his regular food.... and I got the same answer.... what should I do next... I wonder why he suddenly refuses his food... even though he runs to like his sisters empty plate.... I don't want to take him to the vet yet.

I have some Periactin pills left over from when Sophia was sick would it b e OK to gove those to him 1/2 tablet every 12 hrs or what that be too hard on his kidneys?

Are you doing subQ fluids for the renal issues?

If his kidneys are worse, the buildup of waste in his blood stream could definitely upset his stomach and drop his appetite. Some folks use 1/4 tablet of Pepcid (good idea to check w/ vet 1st).

Kidney failure or kidney insufficiency? I believe the difference is that one is treatable, the other is more serious...

Are you treating with fluids? phosphorous binders? Feeding dry food or canned? You may want to get him in for some blood work and see if he's dehydrated, and definitely consider the pepcid.

Thank you. I am feeding wet food... NF for kidneys and t he other one the low carb food.

He is drinking a lot distilled water and last time the vet said he was doing well......the strange thing is that he gobbled up the few dry morsels I gave him. He does not act sick and purrs and wants to go on the porch in the sun. Still something is not right. He has always been eating so well.
I think I will take him to the vet on Friday if he still refuses his food because I don't want to put more strain on his kidneys by giving him food that the vet has not approved.

How bad are his kidneys? I asked before, and it is important. If his values are just a bit elevated, indicating insufficiency and not fullblown failure, then you do not have to limit protein.

Jen.. I just called t he vet and all they said t hat the blood work looks good... but I insisted on the BUN which was 17 and apparently good as they tell me. she also said that the creatinine was the bun.

Greylie started to eat a little... which is good.... but I will keep an eye on him.... the office said to come back in for a blood test between feb and april.. the last one was in august.

How have his glucose levels been?

If he isn't eating properly, it could be renal, diabetic, or something else. Within 3 days of not eating, a cat may go into hepatic lipidosis where the liver becomes overwhelmed by the fat being broken down for calories. And if he's breaking down fat for calories, that could raise the ketone levels and send him into ketoacidosis.

None of those is good - I think it'd be a good idea to take him in to the vet.

Greylie's bg is OK he has been under 100 when checked.... 180 at the vet in august... He has been diet controlled for a long time... but I keep an eye on him .. he has to eat right or I take him to the vet.... i worry too about that fatty liver if he does not eat.

I know on my blood test it says BUN and I think my creatinine is featured too.... now the girl at the vet's offices said it was 17 and that seemed very good.. I am a little confused now too...I think I have to dig out my own blood test....
