It's been awhile! I like to look at this board here and there but to be honest, I get high anxiety reading a lot of threads. We have been in remission for quite a long time and I often fear slipping backwards. I've never known such anxiety. Everyone here helped me so much.
I test her here and there and all has been good. She has hyperthyroidism and is on daily meds (1.25mg chews) twice a day that combine with a pill pocket and she likes them. She gets UTI's and I know she has a slow progressing issue with her bladder but the vet keeps an eye on that.
I did a morning poke this morning and she tested 141. I am trying not to panic. She had just had her meds a few hairball control feline greenies and am praying that's all it is.She only eats FF Chicken Pate and pork loin. When should I panic?? I have a vet that comes to my home because Jade gets dangerously worked up when she has to go to the vet. I did notice that she hasn't peed since last night but isn't going in and out of the box like she's in discomfort or distress. As i was writing this, she did pee with no issues.
Thanks for any advice!

Jill,
Hairballs and or an infection can raise numbers. Bowel issues too. My hope for you and Jade would be to resolve those things, and see the checks stay green!
In May last year, Tina had gone up to 161, and I almost panicked until I remembered, a hairball had caused a BG rise several months earlier before going OTJ.
Best of luck - just love Jade's eyes and picture!

Test again 3-4 hours after eating. If it comes down the pancreas is working. An occasional over 100 happens and it looks like there could have been many causes. Did she have an ear infection? She looks like she’s doing fine looking at your ss.

She had an ear infection awhile back. I just tested her again and it said 187 and now I’m shaking. I will test again in 3 hours as she had just eaten. I’m so upset.

How long have you been aware of the hyperthyroidism? Luci was diagnosed in December. We did the ear gel twice a day, but her BG's were so erratic! I then decided to proceed with the I-131 treatment...and now we're post-treatment by almost a month - Luci's numbers are kinda awful but I'm hoping they will settle down soon...she's gaining weight and seems to feel fabulous! Her fur is thick and shiny and she hasn't puked since the treatment (that's new!)...

She was diagnosed in May. We had to tweak the meds once, but she’s doing well on the 1.25mg chews. Her numbers haven’t gone past 125 since remission. I’m so worried. She’s 16 and has been through a lot. I’m glad Lucy feels good!! Jade is acting fine, I was shocked to see a high number!

It could be due to the hyperthyroidism...Luci used to be a bit better regulated...but once that hit her numbers were all over the road...the issue for us was the weight loss and of course the puking...

Her first follow up is next Monday (blood work to check her thyroid levels)...we'll see what's going on with that then.

I hope this is a temporary thing..but Jade may need to be re-checked for her thyroid levels on the meds..may need adjusting?

Thanks! I put a call in to the Vet.

Has Jade every had her teeth cleaned? Dental issues are one of the primary problems that can throw a cat out of remission. If you're calling the vet, make sure that Jade's teeth are examined.

Her teeth are a mess. But, with her health issues, I don’t think going under anesthesia is recommended for her.

It’s back down to 80!! Oh I’m so relieved! I wonder why she spiked? I’m guessing it was the greenies? I don’t gone then to her very often. I’ll check again tomorrow just to make sure all is well. Thanks for helping! You guys are always so good to me and Jade :):bighug::kiss:

If your kitty is prone to UTI's a 3rd teaspoon of D-Mannose powder mixed in water a few times a week will clear it up & keep her from getting one .
My cat Ravan just had a UTI. Vet prescribed antibiotic. He vomited from one pill & I read antibiotic can cause nausea & can make them stop eating
I gave Ravan D-Mannose 3 X a day for 2 days & he was back to being OK.

Good idea not to feed any dry food .

I’m guessing it was the greenies

( Google it and you'll find hundreds of people talking about the severe adverse side effects of Greenies including liver failure and seizures and cardiac arrest )

There was only one greenie that was considered low carb. It was discontinued. The greenies might well be the culprit.

Is the hyperthyroid chew sweetened? Ask what the inactive ingredients are.
She’s been on the thyroid chews since June, so I don’t think that’s the culprit. Her Vet knows about the diabetes, so she’s very careful with Jades meds. It’s made in New Jersey and it’s shipped to Chicago. I think they only add Chicken flavoring to the Methimazole. I gave her 4 or 5 hair ball control greenies this morning and tested her not long after. I have to think that was the culprit. I have her pill pockets in a Tupperware with the greenies so that the pockets taste good to her. I mix the chew and pill pocket together, she doesn’t like the chew by itself. No more greenies for her!!
Hopefully, when I test her tomorrow, she will be on the green!

Hi Jill

I was wondering if they had sugars in them, I'm glad she came back down.
I tried George on a supplement for his arthritis, it had some sugars in it, even just the one tablet a day raised his BG, I had to stop them :-(
(1.25mg chews)
Are her med chews sugar free? Perhaps ask your vet.

If she has hairballs you might want to look into egg yolk powder.
Food Fur Life has some info on managing furballs and a recipe for you to make your own dried egg powder (they usually stock it but are having delivery problems at present)

Georges teeth got in a bad way and this saw him come out of remission. Our usual vet wasn't prepared to do anything about it, because of his age(19 at the time), and health issues. He got very sick. I sought a second opinion, because he was getting more and more sick, anyways the second vet, a more experienced vet did a dental, removed almost all his teeth, I don't think we would have got to that point had we been in his care in the first instance.
I must admit I was really scared when he went in for his dental, he recovered well, and he got back into remission.

I’m happy to hear that he did well after his dental! I’m scared to death to have Jade go under anesthesia. She had surgery years ago for a horrible ear infection and ruptured ear drum. It took her well over a week to shake it off. She’s hyper sensitive to any sort of anti anxiety meds as well. She does NOT enjoy the buzz. She gets so scared. She’s a very sensitive ( to everything) girl.
I did just talk to her doctor. She thinks it was the greenies and then the anxiety that shot her BG up even more. No more greenies for her! I don’t gone them very often anyway, but had no idea her BG went up so high after I did. : (
She’s coming to the house for jades thyroid bloodwork next month and I’ll definitely revisit the dental discussion with her. I want Jade to love her best life. Like all of us, I love my furgirl to the moon.

Also, she doesn’t really have furball issues. I just know she likes the treats. :)

I just know she likes the treats. :)
lol I'm sure she would love the freeze dried treats, FD friendly, Orijen do some, and there are other brands, but I'm not familiar with the other US brands. George goes crazy for them and the other cats have trained me to top their dinner with Freeze dried treats:rolleyes:

I’ve tried just about all the recommendations for treats, she doesn’t like any of them. She’s quite the princess. Can’t imagine how she got so spoiled. Lol.
