As of this morning Gus is off the juice!!!! Today was 2 weeks since his last shot and his numbers have been consistently between 74 and 129 (except for one test at 149 after a thunderstorm!) We saw the doctor on Friday because we thought Gus had a uti because he wasnt using the box. I attribute this to him having diarrhea for 4 days after the hypo and the IV glucose. Doc says he's fine and continue with his supplements and his low carb diet!!!!! Thank you all so much for all of your help. Ill be sticking around because this is a great website plus Gus still has the neuropathy.

Wow! Fantastic news! We need to have a party here to celebrate.

I'll bring the homemade ice cream. Custard based, farm fresh eggs, 100% real maple syrup as the sugar, lightly toast the walnuts to bring out the flavor and voila! One of the best maple walnut ice creams you'll probably ever taste. ;-)

I showed doc F Gus' numbers on Friday and he said "this cat is a mystery! He's not diabetic anymore!" So we are VERY VERY happy!!!!

Please continue to test daily for a while, at least a week, but once a day should be enough. Then you can switch to only testing weekly. When you get really comfortable and confident that the numbers are going to stay low, you can go to once a month BG testing if you want.

Be sure to keep the carb content on the food low. I can still see little spikes in Wink's BG's if he gets too much 9-10% carb or sneaks some of my breakfast cereal, the contraband hound!

Personally, I still test once a week with my foster cat Wink. My feeling is that I'd rather catch a BG rise very early and get him back on insulin ASAP if that is needed. He's has been OTJ for over two months now and I'm hoping for much, much longer.

Here's hoping you get a very successful long, long remission with Gus. :RAHCAT :RAHCAT :RAHCAT

I'll keep testing him daily for a little longer. He's staying on low carb and ill keep a close eye on him!! Hoping this is a good long remission.

:RAHCAT Gus is otj_icon Yay! party_cat

It's not a mystery; it's because you took control of his diabetes and managed it properly. So both you an Gus deserve the props for this happening. :-D

Gus still is a diabetic, simply a diet controlled diabetic like my foster Wink.

Excellent job on getting Gus so that he doesn't need any more insulin right now.

I just think its crazy that he had perfect numbers after the hypo episode. Thanking my lucky stars!!!

Personally, I think a hypo can kickstart kitties and lead to OTJ. That is at least partially what happened with Wink. That along with a low carb diet change and a move to a loving home instead of life in the shelter.

That's what the other cat specific vet told me. She said cats are the only animal that can heal itself and said it was called transient diabetes. I don't care how or what the control came from... Ill take it. Gus and I will celebrate tonight after dinner with some deli cheese for him! :)

  WAY TO GO GUS!!!

FYI - tips to help keep him OTJ

1. test every couple of weeks
2. never ever feed dry food again. and if you switch brands of wet food be very very sure they are low carb. If in doubt dont buy them. No high carb treats ever!.
3. Have regular checkups and watch for infection - UTI, dental, ear etc
4. Keep an eye on the pee patch sizes
5. Weigh him once a month
6. When getting ANY medication from the vet double check there is no sugar in it (oral) and no steroids (any form). You would be surprised how vets forget.

If you do this you should be able to catch any issues before they happen.

:RAHCAT :RAHCAT :RAHCAT :RAHCAT CONGRATULATIONS!!!! Gobbles said he would bring his personal stash of 'nip to the celebration!!!!

Congratulations!

And print out the list Wendy wrote up, to pin someplace visible as a reminder. A monthly 'review of systems', aka Whole Cat Report, is good for everyone to do for their cats. It helps find any problems before they become severe.

I'm still testing him twice a day. Ill do it for another week or so. I think the aspirin and the b-12 are kicking in. He's been a lot more mobile the last few days! His peepee issues are resolving and things are getting back to normal around here!
