He just sat and purred. Thanks to the advice here I poked once and I was able to get enough blood to test. His Bg was 291, 4 hours after eating. He has not had insulin in 3 days per vet's rec. I'm going to test again in a few hours. From what I'm reading here, this number is way too high. Our next vet appt is Thursday.

Good for you!!! Seriously, if you have testing down before starting insulin, it will make everything easier. That is high, but not outrageous to the moon high at least. Have you switched to low carb food yet? It's an excellent time to try that, since you are testing and not on insulin.

Poke #2 @ 12:30 was a success. But his Bg wasn't. He is up to 301. We were so hopeful we would be able to control through diet alone.

Give it time. It takes a little time for the body to adjust.

Simba was able to have food regulated when we tried in 2008, but he actually needs to be on insulin due to it normalizes a high liver ALT (alat here) problem he have had since year 2000. It manifested itself in a lot of vomiting, he vomitted 3 times daily for 10 years! until he got diabetes and the insulin. And as soon as the insulin came on board, the ALT normalized and all the vomiting stopped. So that is the reason why I have chosen, mind you, chosen, to still keep him on insulin and food to go with that. But otherwise he too can be food regulated, so don't get discouraged!

Poke #3 at 2:30 was a horrible fail. I just couldn't do it alone. Charley was not purring nor was my poke successful - no blood after 3 tries. Gave him a treat, a ton of love, and will just try again later when my DH is home.

Hi I just posted on your other thread. Sorry - I didn't have all the information.
Okay - so you're trying to switch foods first to see if that will help-you've not started insulin yet?
That sounds good. The numbers aren't too bad. Still in the range of needing insulin if nothing changes, but they aren't sky-high.

Learning to test takes time. If you do it with a low carb treat he will start coming to YOU to get tested. It's amazing what a treat can do. Don't get frustrated; it's a process. Do you use a rice sock to warm the ear?

We started insulin on 1/9 and discontinued on 1/25 due to a bg reading of 59. My third attempt today just was horrible. He didn't even want to come to me. He was hungry for his dinner, and I was frustrated. Tomorrow will be a new day. At least he is loving his Fancy Feast pate.

I just wanted to tell you, don't get discouraged on the diet.
It *may* be possible that your kitty's pancreas needs a little healing and maybe a little help.
I had success with diet change, but not diet alone. It took a little micro dosing to help the pancreas along until it eventually started doing it's job on it's own.
This may never happen for you, but it's possible.

My baby's number are back in shootable range, but I think it's because of a UTI. Hopefully when it clears up, she will be back OTJ.

And congrats. on your testing. It will get easier.
