confused_cat Gramps numbers have been staying above 350', somedays in the 400's and two days above 600. we weaned him off DRYFOOD, and feeding 3 to4 times a day wetfood ..... he does have dental issues that will be dealt with on the 14th... But is there anything we can do to help get his numbers down? I don't feel comfortable with it that high.... Any type of wetfood that could help.... Is gravy bad?

Is Gramps on insulin? Which kind?

Yes gravy foods are generally higher in carbs than we recommend diabetic cats be fed. Less than10%from carbohydrate is best.

Sometimes the diet change drops their BG and if they are still getting too high of dose of insulin, they can rebound, which is a reaction to the bg going lower or dropping too quickly.

We need more info to help you further - such as how much insulin and what BG has been.

You can post Bgs likethis if you don't have a spreadsheet.

Preshot bg at AM cycle or AMPS, insulin dose
+2 bg
+6bg
PMPS, insulin dose

Thank You for all of your advice.... basically he is on Prozinc 5 units twice a day. We have slowly cut out his DRYFOOD, and giving Friskies Pâté, or PurinaProPlan wetfood. He receieves 4 feeds between a quarter can to half can, be pending on how hungry he is... we have noticed that whence testan hour after his feed and insulin shot, he goes down about 100 on his BG. lately, we where trying to give him 4 units when he is between 300 to 400, if higher we give him5 units.... Only once did we give him6 unitsbecausehis # s where above 600. He never seems to be under 300.

I am really need to know if there's a CHART that tells me how much insulin to give, based on his BG reading.... I don't understand what +2,means.... Does it mean 2 hours later....
My BIGGEST issue and concern ishowmuch insulin I need to give based on his numbers. I do not have a PC where Gramps is.

my vet sees him on the 14th, and hope she can help me... The vetI got him from told me 5 units every12 hrs.

hanks Tracy

You cut the amount of carbs in his diet but haven't adjusted his insulin dose. My bet is that the dose is too high.

No, there isn't. Insulin dose is not based on preshot values. You need to do the testing to see how he reacts to the insulin and adjust accordingly. The way his body handles the insulin is not necessarily going to be the same as any other cat.

And what data is that based on? 5 units is a pretty significant dose for any cat. How long ago was he diagnosed and did you build up to that number gradually?

That is a VERY high dose of insulin - especially if he isn't getting dry food. Normally the friskies pate are under 10% carbs but I don't know about the Pro Plan - kimouette gave you the link to check the carbs on the foods you have. The general rule is to try and keep to foods that are under 7% carbs.
If Gramps was my kitty I would drop him back to 1 unit 2/day and start from there. I will try and get some others that have more experience than me from the pzi board to come over and give you some ideas and suggestions..

If I understand correctly, you say gramps is fed and given insulin and 1 hour later is 100 points lower? This is very important, if this is true it means he likely has some pancreas action of his own going on there, prozinc does not typically start lowering BG until 2 hours after a shot. The 5 units is a huge dose, there are only a few cats here who are on more than 2 units. The 5 units could most likely be causing those +600 readings. If I am correct, and you are seeing a drop of 100 in the hour after the food/shot, I would switch immediately to 0.5 units and see how things go. It may take a few days for the numbers to come down, if insulin dose is too high the pancreas releases hormones to keep the BG elevated and keep the cat from risking injury from low numbers and it can take a while to clear those hormones.

Hello,
Please let us know what type of syringes you are using. Perhaps, I missed this information in your other threads. Are you using U-100 (ORANGE cap over the needle) or U-40 (RED cap over the needle part) syringes for ProZinc? That will help us help you. I know how difficult it is to get and share information when you have little access to the internet. Best wishes for you and Gramps.
