When I got home from work the package was on the doorstep. The ice packs were melted and hot. Is the insulin ok?

There's no way to know if the insulin is viable. Unopened Lantus is typically stored in the refrigerator at between 36 - 46 degrees F. Once opened, Lantus can be stored at room temperature but it should not be at over 86 degrees F.

I would get in touch with the pharmacy immediately and tell them that you cannot risk using this insulin. Don't open any of the pens. Ask for instructions on how to send it back and ask for a refund or an overnight or 1- or 2-day replacement shipment. In the meantime, get your vet to give you a new prescription and get it filled locally. Wait for cooler weather before ordering online again. Which pharmacy did you order from?

Good luck, and I hope it will work out! I have received insulin where the cold packs were soft, but still cool, and the insulin was fine. But if the cold packs are hot, that doesn't sound good!

That’s exactly what happened to us this week. The lantus was warm to the touch, at least 90F. I called the pharmacy and the pharmacist told me that lantus is very stable, that if there were no particles floating and it was clear, it was safe. I had my doubts and called Sanofi-aventis (800-633-1610). The manufacturer service customer rep said under no circumstances should it be used if it has reached 86F. I called back the pharmacy and they authorized a return. Scary stuff!

Well crap. I can't afford to order it locally. It was $125 cheaper online from a canadian pharmacy. I'll call and see what they say.

The cost for the replacement may go to the manufacturer. I think if you call Sanofi like Linda did, they may authorize a local pharmacy to replace the insulin.

I called once and left my # for them to call me back. Called again and left a voicemail after 10 minutes of waiting. Then sent an email. I guess I'll try again tomorrow.

Ms. Bean and Jasper,
Good luck with the pharmacy - I hope they call you soon. Jasper is putting you to the test! Poor girl, her luck will get better once this is taken care of! Hang in there.

Alright I called back today and they are sending me new lantus that will arrive in 5-10 days and putting more ice packs in it. They said to just throw the other lantus in the trash. So yeah.

Do you have insulin?

If so, could you start getting some spot checks during both the AM and PM cycles? Lantus dosing is based on the nadir (lowest point in the cycle) so spot checks are very important if you are going to adjust Jasper's dose.

I have 1 test strip. I ordered some Monday and they are supposed to be in either today or Monday.
