Gorda this morning

Greetings again, everyone

Thanks for your help so far - here's the scoop. She woke up this morning and was clearly hungry! I've discovered Fancy Feast "appetizers", which aren't supposed to be full meals, but really do seem to jumpstart her appetite. She ate a whole container of that, and I syringe-fed her about a half a can of wet food. Unfortunately, she's just not used to eating a whole meal in one sitting, so it's really hard to get her to eat for more than a minute or two. But still, this is the first indication I've seen for a few days that she really wants food.

Here's her glucose numbers - I did a mini-curve last night, and got up at 4 this morning to do another test, but my machine kept coming up with test strip errors. Weird. Anyways, I'm giving her Humulin-N, and here are the numbers.

6:00PM - 337 mg/dL
6:18PM - food + insulin
8:00PM - 269 mg/dL
10:00PM - 177 mg/dL
11:00PM - 138 mg/dL
12:00AM - 134 mg/dL

And when I tested her at 7:30 this morning, she was only up to 231 mg/dL. Because of the drop of over 200 mg/dL last evening, I decided to decrease her insulin dose from 2 to 1.5 units to ensure she doesn't drop too low today.

So my questions are thus:

1. It seems that the nadir could be a little bit lower, but is awfully close to the ideal range. But her highest point yesterday was quite high. Is there a special trick for dropping the midpoint while keeping the nadir in about the same range?

2. Any specific advice from former or current Humulin-N users?

3. Is it ok to give her milk?

I think that's it for now. I'm going to get some ketone test strips today, as she's still quite dehydrated and slightly lethargic. Thank you all for your help so far!

You might try testing later than the + 6 today if possible. It would be really good news if the Humulin is lasting longer than in some other cats (who nadir at +4 or so and then head right back up) It would make regulation easier. It would be good info to have to see how fast she goes back up after the nadir.

Those are not bad numbers at all, especially for a new diabetic. Tweaking the diet may also bring them down further. I think reducing the dose was a good idea this morning also.

This is all about data. The more information you can get about how the Humulin works for her, the better you can react to her numbers.

This day has gone a little differently, I think because she's eating better and she's definitely not as dehydrated. Perhaps her condition yesterday slowed her metabolism. Here's the curve so far:

7:30 AM - 231 mg/dL
7:45 AM - food + insulin
10:00AM - 267 mg/dL
12:00PM - 212 mg/dL
2:30 PM - 225 mg/dL

Definitely a weird curve today, perhaps because she ate well in the morning and the Fancy Feast appetizer probably had a carbohydrate content higher than your typical wet food. So I decided to give her an extra 2 units of insulin after the last measurement, because her blood glucose is on its way back up. I'll feed her again as well, and keep a close eye on her for the next few hours. I hope it wasn't too much, but I want her to get under 200 for a good chunk of the day.

In other news, she went outside for a bit and is acting much more like her normal self. I'm very encouraged right now!

If you are going to give her milk keep in mind milk has lactose which is a disaccharide sugar (galactose + glucose = lactose) so it may make her numbers a bit higher.
