Good news for Quincy

I am soo happy. The vet called back and told me to drop Quincy's Caninsulin dose to 0.5 IU twice a day. She is reasonably confident that he is headed for remission. It is going to be hard to draw up that amount as my syringes are in 1 unit intervals, but we are going to do the very best we can. My vet said we will do another curve next Sunday but I will have to watch him this week for any signs of polyuria or polydipsia and test as needed......keep your paws crossed everyone....maybe soon we will be in the OTJ club :RAHCAT

Hi Tracy!

Good news for you both. But a couple of very important things.

You can buy syringes with 0.5 increments - it makes dosing sooooo much easier and much more accurate. Do you have a Walmart near you? They are inexpensive and available at most drug stores.

Are you home testing? If not, you should really, really consider starting and we can help you learn how. You do not need your vets permission and you will not have to do curves at vet's office anymore.
It is dangerous to give insulin at any time at any dose without knowing the blood glucose numbers before hand. We call that shooting blind and I know you do not want to put your cat in danger....but it is what you are doing each day when you don't have the information you need. You will save money (from not doing the curves), you will be so much more accurate, and you can make decisions based on what's happening EVERY day, vs. that one piece of info you're getting every 7.

PLEASE, if you've taken anything away from this board, it's that you must test your baby - let us know your thoughts and concerns so that we can best help you know how, when and why. Please also read the important Sticky's :

This will get you going so that you can let us know how we can help. Please consider testing...it is sooo important!

I haven't seen U40 syringes with half unit markings - but that doesn't mean that they don't exist. In the meantime, take a used syringe and draw up 1 unit of water. Practise slowly twisting the plunger and pushing ever so gently so that one drop at a time comes out. You should be able to get 10 drops. Then, you can do the same with the Caninsulin (new syringe!) and press out 5 drops. Yes, you'll waste a bit, but small price for Quincy to go off insulin! Good luck.

Thanks so much for this advice. I am going to try this to get as accurate dose as is possible. I have not seen U40's in .5 increments either but it is worth a try to go and look.

I do home testing all the time. The curves are done once a week to phone in for the vet.

I believe that U40 syringes are only available from a vet as human insulins are U100. If you have real problems getting the .5, you might consider using U100 syringes and the conversion chart here - http://felinediabetes.com/insulin-conversions.htm - especially if you go to even smaller doses. Then it would be useful to get some U100 syringes from the pharmacy.

Good for you ;-) ;-)

Are you able to put a spreadsheet together? It would be most helpful for those of us reading through.
