Good news - last week I got "promoted". I've moved one step up the ranger ladder. Slight increase in pay and benefits, a slightly bigger house. Same hours (different all the time). More duties and responsibilities (no big deal). So that's the good news. YAY me!

Bad news - the new house I mentioned. It's only about 1 mile from my current digs. Just as close to the ocean, although on a busier part of the beach. Still a 2 or 3 minute walk from my door to the water. BUT.... possible limited access to the internet. Right now, my net access is totally dependent upon my cell phone. Either use the phone itself, or tether it to my PC and access thru my phone provider. This new house has really crappy cell reception. Poor signal, and there one minute, gone the next. Can't switch providers because I still have a year on my contract. Right now, I am hoping to get a 2nd phone line with high speed service, or cable service with internet. Do not know if either is actually available to me though. My current house, I have DirecTV with a good signal (though not good enough for Satellite Internet). New house, surrounded by trees and questionable satellite reception, definitely no local channel service. If I can get cable w/ internet, I'm all set. If not, it has to be a phone line added. Can't use the "company" phone line for anything but local calls. This is the fun of living where I live! Can't complain, the rent is really cheap! And even if I can get a phone line, not certain that a DSL set up is available. That's the fun of living at the end of the highway where the road ends and the water begins. We're in the boonies here!

So, by Friday or Saturday, I will be cut off from the information superhighway, unless I leave the house so I can use my phone. That means my posts are likely to be really short and have a lot of words misspelled.
It could be at least a week, possibly two, before I am back on the grid, assuming I can get the services I want. Probably have to buy a new PC too, but that's fine, this one is ancient (still running windows XP here).

Just wanted to let y'all know...

Carl

Congrats on the promotion! For what it's worth, you may be able to get out of your contract if your carrier does not cover your primary residence. I went through this with Sprint. It took a number of phone calls with tech support, but they let me off the hook. Might be worth a try.

In other words... please don't leave us, Carl!

Well, the plan is to get cable internet and set up a wifi network in the house. then I can use wifi calling, my ipod too, plus the PC, all wireless. You know, like someone who lives in the 21st century! Right now, thru my cell, I'm moving at the speed of dial up. Can't even get a 3g signal here, and they keep offering me great deals on a new 4g phone.... The only carriers with coverage on even parts of the island are t-mobile and verizon. I tell them "You upgrade your tower, I'll upgrade my phone, OK?"

Congrats on the promotion Carl! All good news! The phone and service stuff I'm sure you'll get straightened out. Just glad you received good news on the job front. :-D

Great news on the promotion!

Wait. What? Limited Carl?

No way, Jose! That just won't do! I sure hope something gets worked out so you can stay in touch. Oh man, I'm already feeling withdrawals! Nooooo!

I’m psyched for you dude! Awesome! Good work news today is rare so revel in it! Huge congrats :-D
You will work out the inter-tubes thing. Amazing how we all rely so much on that plug into the internet.
Good on ya!

Congratulations Carl!

I was able to get DSL only from AT&T but it doesn't sound like you have anything like that.

We will wait anxiously until you are able to get back up on line again.

Congratulations on the promotion! Selfishly, I'm with Teresa on going into withdrawal, but with the current economic situation your promotion is a major YAY!! I hope you find an internet solution soon; I know what you mean about being dependent on it. There aren't really options for us here, either, we did manage to get Verizon (DSL only) but that isn't always dependable, either. Windows XP, huh?

Take care -

Libby

Actually, I love XP! When I started using a computer for work (this dates me), we "upgraded" to Windows 3.0, and I had been using DOS 5.0 prior to that. Of all the versions of Windows, XP is definitely my favorite. My computer has never crashed on me.
We use Windows 7 at work and I hate it. I keep looking for the button that says "make it look like Windows XP". And the newest version of MS Office is a piece of crap. I know when I buy a new one, I'll have no choice, but not looking forward to the OS at all.

Great news on the promotion, Carl! But seriously, this being off line will not work for us. Maybe you should just spend the weekend at the public library?

At least you get to skip Vista. Yikes.

I'd rather do that than spend all weekend moving furniture!

Yeah, Carl, I loved XP, too. But, system crashed; didn't have a hard copy and couldn't buy one at that point. So, Windows 7 it was. And, I've adjusted pretty well. Thank goodness, no Vista! My mom loaned us her laptop in the interim and she 'uses' Vista. (Actually, I think she just plays online games.) Don't worry about dating yourself - I fondly remember playing Spy Hunter and Q*Bert on my Dad's Commodore 64

I played "Mule" with my dad- and that was a good hour long game! And I remember the old Atari games called "Space Invaders" and "Frogger"

One laptop uses XP the other Vista- I hate it when it pops up "Did you want to .... ?"
I'm like "Yes, that's why I clicked it in the first place!"

7 is better- one of the computers that I am on at work has that and it is pretty much like XP without the annoying "Did you mean?" part. Supposedly you can take it off but I haven't been able.

Congrats, and a soon to be "Welcome" to the world of high speed internet. You're gonna love it. Let me know when you're ready to be directed to many "most-awesome" videos.

Since your computer isn't prone to crashes, I don't know that you "have" to get a new computer for the high-speed factor...but you'll probably "want" to. If you do get a new one, please, oh please, don't skimp on the RAM. If you're like me, you won't be getting another computer anytime soon, so you need to make sure the new computer at least "has the room" to accept future RAM upgrades. I would have to look at my notes, as I may be remembering this wrong, but "the room" is in the form of DIMMS.

I'm running Windows 7 Professional (64 bit). The "Pro" version has the ability to run XP programs, whereas, the "Home Premium" doesn't. I backed up the entire hard drive of my XP, moved it to an external hard drive, and can access all of my XP programs, and files, with ease. BTW, you don't need an external drive to do this, it was strictly my preference. You also won't have to worry about any programs or downloads, that are a few-years-old, not being compatible with Win 7. Your computer will just think, "Oh, XP...I can do that...I remember those days". You're not even aware of any difference between a Win 7 program or file, and an XP. It goes back and forth from 7 to XP seamlessly. If you're already aware of this stuff...please disregard everything above...except for the congrats.

Lastly, there is a way to configure Win 7 to look like XP. I thought about doing it, but I'm glad I didn't, and would never look back. When I have the time, and patience, to fire up the old XP in the kitchen (which is never...since it takes 45 minutes for the desktop to load), I look at the desktop and feel like a stranger in a strange antiquated land.

Piece of crap is a nice way of saying it. I like to use more inappropriate verbiage...until I'm out of breath.

Ranger CArl!!
Congrats on your promotion!
I finally got to see a picture of you!
funny how you always picture someone oppisite of what they look like!
Good luck in you r new home!

Not yet, Robin. I have the next four days off, and going to the cable company is near the top of the to-do list.

Deb,
thank you for the PC advice! I'm going to get a new machine, mostly because this one is just ancient. It's an old gateway case, but not too much under the hood is "stock" hardware. I've just pieced it together over the years. Sort of like an old friend though, so I'll keep it around just for old time's sake. I can make it wireless capable, so it can serve as an emergency backup. Not really sure what I'll end up buying. Not going to break the bank, but RAM is a priority, with the extra slots if/when I need them.
I do know that I can get a brand new machine for less than this one cost when it was new. I'm staying away from any sort of laptop, just because I've never used one that I liked. Got to have a real keyboard and mouse, can't deal with those stooopid "touch pad" mouse things. I have a habit of drumming my fingers..... NO that wasn't a double click dammit! It was an involuntary twitch! Drives me nuts...

I dream of a world where I don't have to wait till a two minute youtube video buffers for 15 minutes and then plays for 10 seconds, and then buffers some more. I could have filmed it, edited it, put a soundtrack to it, published it, and watched it get 10,000 "likes" in the time it takes the frigging thing to download!!!

Carl

Oh good, I'm glad you get the importance of RAM slots, or DIMMS, or whatever they are. I wasn't sure, and was worried you would spend the bucks, and then be screwed further on down the line.

Damnnnnn, you can film, edit, add sound, publish, and get 10,000 likes (out of lord knows how many views) in 15 MINUTES????? Man-O-Man, do we have to talk.

Good luck with your move! I wish I could help...which is a lot easier on the back than actually helping....

nonononoonooooo.....the 15 minutes, that was "per 10 seconds of video". It takes overnight to download the freaking whole thing! I'm moving at the speed of dial up here. Almost expect to hear that good old "dial tone"...."phone number dialing"....scratching static white noise....until finally the "bing, bing, bong" noise we used to get from the modems and the on-board "speaker".
