Going Out of Town / Need Solid "Do or Don't" Shoot Numbers

This is all such new territory, but if you look at Bill's chart, today was a doozy. I ended up giving him his normal dose this morning, and I regretted it all day. He was totally fine, and actually ate really well today (he's been rejecting his paté a bit this week).

After a 90 at his PMPS, we decided to skip his insulin tonight.

What pre-shot umber would you say NO SHOT?? Maybe 180?

We go out of town tomorrow, and I want to leave our petsitter a very clear guide about when to shoot or not.

She did his tests several times this week, and has done his insulin. I'm confident she knows what to do, but I also plan to leave her a very clear step-by-step guide (with emergency info/signs/etc.).

I would reduce his dose down to .5 with a "no shot" under 200 if your petsitter isn't going to be there during the day and night to test.

Cats tend not to eat as well when their routine is different and you can't get much different than the caretakers not being home.

It's better to let him run a little high for a few days than risk one minute too low.

With those green's today, it is not safe to give 1U if nobody is there 24/7 to test as often as necessary and prepared to deal with low numbers.

Sorry to hear you regretted giving him his regular dose. He had a beautiful day in the greens! It's what we all wish for - every day - for our kitties. I know at first it seems difficult, and right now you're preparing to leave - but those were gorgeous numbers. Hope he'll get back to that when you get home from your trip.

I agree with Chris - while you're away reduced dose is best - and keep those numbers higher.

Ok team, he just tested at 140 this morning. What should I do?? I'm thinking .5u? We don't have to leave our house until +3, and I could test him then. Our house sitter will be here at +9, and she's staying around our house all weekend (she is spending the night, because we have dogs too).

That's really nice to hear - thank you for the encouragement. For some reason, I was thinking the numbers were too low.

Edited to add (to my last reply, above). I'd rather keep him on track with his insulin and reduce his dose vs. asking my house sitter to wait to shoot/food. Consistency in the schedule while we are gone is really important. So, I'd like the options to either be skip and feed, or shoot (reduced amount) and feed. When we are back on Monday, I'll get him back on track, and likely do another curve Tuesday or Wednesday.
 
I don’t see a current post so, when you can, if you can start a new condo, that would be great.

You should reduce his dose to 0.25u at tonight’s shot. He earned a reduction with that 48.

I know you are just getting settled back in but, for now, I have one comment that is very important. You need some nighttime tests. You are missing half your data and cats frequently go lower at night. That doesn’t mean you need to stay up all night and test.

Usually, we recommend you get the PMPS test, a +2, and a before bed. Even that amount of data helps. Depending on the +2 and before bed, you might need another test or you might be able to call it a night.
