Yes, it is a good meter and the results are closer to vet lab values than human meters. However, the cost of strips is expensive. They are typically over $1 a strip.
It's an absolutely fine meter to use. (I use an Alphatrak as do a number of other members here.) It's designed to read closer to lab values than human meters (that's what I like best about it). However the strips for it are more pricey than for human meters, so it's expensive to feed!
IMPORTANT NOTE:
Because your Alphatrak meter is calibrated for animal use, a lot of the reference ranges quoted on FDMB will be too low for your meter. The nominal hypo threshold on an Alphatrak is 68mg/dL / 3.8mmol/L. FDMB uses 50mg/dL / 2.8mmol/L. You need to check with your vet about the correct cat BG reference range to use with your Alphatrak meter. (For information only, my vets gave me 3.9 - 8.3mmol/L as the normal BG reference range for a non-diabetic cat.)
I've got the alphatrak2. expensive strips, yes, but I wanted something reliable quickly and didn't have time to shop around, so that's what I got. bought on amazon as well. no complaints here.
