Glucose levels

My cat was diagnosed this Tuesday with a glucose level of 581. I recently started insulin and switched her food to fancy feasts natural.

This morning was the first time I was able to get a successful blood sample for the glucometer. This morning, at the beginning of her breakfast her glucose is 203, and I’m happy it’s going down from 581.

I will do another glucose test at midday and before her dinner. As I continue to monitor her and give insulin, what’s the strategy that you would use once she reached healthy levels?

Congratulations on your first test! That is definitely a much better number than you started with, possibly due to the food change. Well done!

Here's the thing: if she's that low at breakfast, before her shot, you are going to need to monitor some more to keep her safe. It's possible that the food change has helped enough that she needs less insulin than she was prescribed.

What insulin are you using? What dose? That information will help us answer your question about what you should do next.

Congrats on successful home testing! You are on the right track to test before each dose and mid cycle. Depending on what insulin you are giving, you will have a certain peak point and it is a good idea to test at that point to see how low it brings your cat. My cat is currently on Vetsulin and drops lowest at +4 - +6 so I try to always test at these points. Sometimes I do +3 and +5. It all depends on what my morning number was and how our day is going. When I get a number that is much lower than normal (like your number of 203 from 581) I like to test a little more often that day. You could test at +3, +6, +9 or even +2, +4, +6, +8. If this is too much, I would at least try to get that mid-cycle test as a starting point for reference on how your cat is reacting to the current dose.

I just saw the message about testing again only within three hours after insulin.

If you can only get 1 test in between shots, you want to start at getting one somewhere between +5 and +7 (5 to 7 hours after the shot)

I'm not sure where you thought you should test again only within 3 hours, but if you can test more than just once, getting tests at different points in the cycle will only help! If you can get one at +2, +5, +8 that would be great....or +3, +6, +9....or +4 and +7...etc. etc.

You want to get tests sprinkled at different points throughout the cycle so you can learn how her body responds to insulin.
