When does the glucose come out of the urine? Copper has been +2 since he got dx. It went down one time and then went back to +2. Isn't this a sign that there is not enough insulin?

Thx

Glucose spills over into the urine when the BG reaches a certain level. The renal threshold is 280 for cats and once the BG gets above that level (give or take a little) it will begin to spill over into the urine and be eliminated by the kidneys.

You could test a cat a different times during a cycle and get different results regarding glucose in the urine--depending on the BG at the time that you test. The glucose in the urine is hard on the kidneys, that is why you hear so many reference the renal threshold as a target to keep BGs below.

It doesn't really mean not enough insulin, it just means that the BG is elevated above the renal threshold at the time the test is taken.

I hope that makes sense!

Makes sense. It seems copper's urine glucose would be down from +2 as he has been in the low to mid 200's for several days to a week. But it never goes down.

just wondering... how come you are testing urine for glucose if you are hometesting and have blood glucose values?

I know people test urine for ketones, but aren't you duplicating checks? The glucose in the blood will be showing up later in the urine, yes?

Are you testing urine for glucose and ketones? i am not familiar with the results from the 2 kinds of strips, KETOSTIX and KETO-DIASTIX.

I also have the sticks that check both ketones and glucose. I use the glucose readings as an indication of glucose in urine - despite the BGs I get. Poopy also keeps scoring in the +1-+2 for glucose, even though he normally has BGs below 280 during his cycle (but does have the occasional PS above 280).

I know the glucose readings are after the fact, so to speak, and BGs are in the moment. But it does concern me his urine still shows so much glucose (+1 = 1000 ml/dL, +2 = 2000 ml/dL).

I'm watching this thread to see what folks have to share. :-D

Yes, i have the strips that test both the glucose and ketones at once. I know that you are supposed to check it in 15sec for ketones and 30 sec for glucose. THe glucose turns very dark +2 by at least 30sec. I guess the urine glucose will not come out of urine until in the 100's over an extended period of time? I"m a little concerned, but all his bloodwork came back good, especially the kidneys so i feel a little bit better. WIll just keep at the drive to get his BG down.

Hope Poppy's BG go down soon too!

I guess we'll have to keep on eyes on each other, Lori, to see how this works for our kitties. :-D My goal is to get rid of the glucose in the urine - for me a sure sign Poopy is regulated. :-D In the meantime, I'll enjoy the lower BGs, and strive for even lower. :-D

Good luck with Copper's glucose in urine and keep us posted. :-D

Hey Teresa and Lori.....just for some comfort, my Kitty, spilled glucose over in her urine for months as she stayed in numbers above 200 consistently--not just at preshots--she rarely came below 200 even at nadir. It took a long time, to find a dosing regiment that would bring her numbers down. I never checked her urine for glucose, but when she went to the vet for urinalysis she always had glucose in her urine. One of the biggest negatives of glucose in the urine, is it makes for the perfect breeding ground for UTIs.

To help you with your efforts and interest here, I have some urine test strips the vet gave me for Sally. I will check Kitty with a couple of them to see if they test positive. Kitty is pretty much regulated now and is staying below the renal threshold most of the time. I will check her and see what the urine strip reads. It would be interesting information. I would like to know also!
