Houston went for his curve today & it went well. He was only there from 8a-5p so we only have 5 readings. His starting # @ 8:30a was 239 which isn't bad considering he didn't get his full dose last night & it was 14 hrs since his last injection. He was down to 112 @ 3p but started going back up @5p. The Dr said whatever I was doing was working - made me feel good. I asked about doing the glucose test @ home but they weren't thrilled about it. I did get his dose reduce from 1 unit to .8. Houston has been vomiting late nights but didn't last night because I removed the dry food because his bro Denace was going for dental & had to fast. Looks like the dry food will be removed nightly. I must mention that he has been difficult to inject. The first few times I was able to do it while he was eating, after that he started running & hiding. After a few days of chasing him I started crating him & now he goes to the room where the crate is & has even gone into the crate himself. I don't even have to lock the gate.
Has anyone changed their kitty from Lantus to another insulin successfully? Lantus is so expensive. Anyone know of any discounts for Lantus? $270 is the cheapest I can get it.

I'm glad Houston is home. I don't understand why so many vets aren't encouraging about home testing. Humans do, they don't shoot blind, not knowing what the BG is. Home Testing allows you to know how your cat is doing, help prevent hypos and keep your kitty safe. Just changing to an all wet low carb diet lowers BG, and you may give more insulin than needed. From my own experience and from reading members posts, I can say that testing has saved lives, and allowed pet parents to intervene and also learn to adjust dosage, if needed. Please read about this, think about this. It's ultimately your decision, but you are on this board because you love Houston.

Your vet is not thrilled about you doing a curve or just not testing at all? Testing at home is easy and you'll feel a lot more empowered. Remember it's just a test.
You might get Lantus cheaper in Canada. I use Caninsulin so I'm not sure.

thats what i paid for our first lantus purchase too (274 actually), it was a shock to find out how much insulin costs here!!
i got my next lantus purchase from Alan on the forum supply closet, he sells the new & fresh 3ml lantus pens for $35-38 i think it is, i bought 5 for $185 (with shipping). it arrived fine, works like should and didn't expire (without going to look) till like end of 2019.

if you are uncomfortable with buying from a person, others here often order from canada without a perscription for a lot cheaper (a vial is like under $150) than we pay at our pharmacies. not for sure but, i think there is a sticky here somewhere with the Canada links.

Yes, the tech (Dr long gone) suggested it was better to have them do it (of course, more $$ for them). I would prefer to test him myself so I know where he's at. All my cousins live in Canada so maybe they can hook me up, their dad (my uncle) is a Dr as well. Need to find a solution that fits the budget. I have all my diabetic father's stuff still here, including needles..............
