Milo's mom

New Member
Really need help in which one is the best to get. Milo is not doing great and every vet I go to just doesn't seem concerned about monitoring him. I want to get the right one the first time because I don't have cash flow to be buying a bunch of different meters. Thanks for the help.

I use the freestyle lite, but from what I understand that is off on cats,
can be up to 100 points so I would not go with that (and the strips are expensive!)
WAit for other people to comment but just an fyi...you can get really cheap metes and strips on Amazon.com

The ReliOn meter at Walmart is very budget friendly running at $8.98. The strips are approx $19.99 for 50 and 100 will set you back $36.

I have tried the Freestyle, the iPet (from the vet), the one from Walgreens (True....something), and the ReliOn. My vet uses the Alphatrak. The ReliOn from Walmart is the one that is the closest to the reading my vet gets. I take it in to the vet's office and test at the same time the vet tests with the Alphatrak. It's only about 20 points lower than the vet one is, usually, which is about 25%, because my kitty is in remission at the moment, so pretty low. The iPet was the one that was most off from the Alphatrak.

I have been using the Relion meters for years with several diabetic cats. I have been very pleased with it. Their customer service is great also. I have had to replace a few because Callie knocked it off of the counter and they have always sent me a replacement meter at no charge.

I second the Relion meters - either the Contour or the Micro - NOT the Relion Ultima. I've tried several, I always go back to the Contour. Strips are cheapest and they actually suck blood better than the more expensive ones....PLUS it only takes a VERY small drop.

HUGS for MamaBean! Scratches for Milo!

Another vote for the Relion micro meter from Walmart. I actually have two meters for two different diabetic cats, I use the relion for Maxwell who is in remission, since I can get very small batches of strips for it cheaply since I don't test him that often. But for budget friendly it can't be beat.

Musette I use a Bayer Contour which I also love but the strips for it are much pricier that those for the Relion Micro.
