Hello! I just visited the vet to go over how to take blood samples from Niccolo and the vet tech tried to sell me a $70 animal specific glucometer saying it was more accurate for pets than my human glucometer from Relion that I have read about here. Does anyone find this is true or have issues getting accurate readings with their Relion meter?

We hear that song and dance a LOT around here

What's important when making dose decisions is "trends" more than individual numbers.....Is the current dose getting them where we want them to be? That's what matters most.

The main difference between the pet meters and the human ones are the costs involved....the strips for the pet meters are about $1 EACH, where the Relion Confirm or Micro's strips are $35.88/100

For those of us that are testaholics and test 6-8 times a day(or more), we'd have to rob a bank to afford the strips for the pet meters....you also have to either buy them from the vet or online...with the Relion meters, if you need them at 3am on a Sunday night when you're cat is having a hypo, you can get them! You can't if you're using the pet meter and run out of strips at the wrong time

The pet meters read a little higher than human ones, but as long as you understand the "scale", that's what matters. It's kind of like a thermometer....they have them that read in Farenheit and Celcius....as long as you understand the scale, you know if 32 degrees is cold or hot!

I've never had a problem with my Relion Micro meter and I like the convenience of stopping in a Walmart if I run out of strips. Plus the low cost of the strips. If your vet questions the use of the Relion human meter compared to a pet-specific meter, show him or her BJM's Glucometer Notes.

Thank you everyone for all your insight! I'm new to all of this and still learning to navigate this sight so apologies if I'm asking questions that have been discussed a dozen times already! It really has been very helpful so far...more info here than I'm getting at the vet's office!

No apologies needed!!

We were all new here once and others who had been here before us reached out to help us learn the sugardance, and we are just "paying it forward"!

Ask all the questions you want...and if you spend a little time reading other people's posts, you may find questions (and answers) you didn't know you should ask!

Hello! I have had teh same discussion with my vet and if you just keep in mind the difference between numbers (last time I went and tested side by side it was a 70pt difference) and just keep on working to get the numbers down, you should be fine. You just need to be careful when you hit the low low low numbers as then you are giong to be needing to keep eyes and thoughts glued to hypo states. :cat:
